About Janelle

Hello! My name is Janelle, and I am a triple-major graduate from the University of California, Irvine with degrees in Biological Sciences, Language Science, and Criminology, Law & Society. I currently work as a Hospital EEG Monitoring Technician and am actively involved in neuroscience research, allowing me to bring real-world clinical and scientific experience into every lesson.

One of my greatest passions is American Sign Language (ASL). My background in Language Science, combined with my experience working in a hospital, has shown me the incredible impact that accessible communication has on patient care and human connection. In my clinical roles, I have had the opportunity to use ASL to communicate with Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients, reinforcing the importance of building trust, promoting accessibility, and ensuring every patient feels seen, heard, and respected.

Because of these experiences, my ASL lessons go beyond vocabulary and memorization. I emphasize expressive and receptive signing, conversational fluency, Deaf culture, cultural awareness, and practical communication skills that students can confidently apply in everyday life. I especially enjoy working with future healthcare professionals, including nursing, pre-med, physician assistant, EMT, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and other healthcare students who want to develop communication skills that support compassionate, patient-centered care.

In addition to ASL, I also tutor Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Criminology, and introductory Law for high school and college students. As a former university Learning Assistant, I understand that every student learns differently and strive to make challenging concepts approachable, engaging, and easy to understand. I also mentor students interested in undergraduate research by providing guidance on finding research opportunities, reading scientific literature, preparing research posters and presentations, and exploring careers in healthcare, medicine, and scientific research.

My teaching philosophy is simple: understand first, memorize second. Every lesson is personalized to your learning style, goals, and pace. Whether you're learning ASL, preparing for an exam, or exploring a future career in healthcare, my goal is to help you build confidence, think critically, and develop practical skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

I am committed to creating a supportive, professional, and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and growing into confident communicators and lifelong learners.

My lessons are designed to help students develop confidence in American Sign Language (ASL) through engaging, personalized, and interactive instruction. Whether you are learning ASL for school, professional development, healthcare, or personal enrichment, each lesson is tailored to your experience level, learning style, and goals.

I believe language is meant to be communicated, not memorized. Rather than focusing solely on vocabulary lists, my lessons emphasize expressive and receptive signing, conversational fluency, grammar, Deaf culture, and practical communication skills that students can confidently use in everyday life.

As both a Language Science graduate and a Hospital EEG Monitoring Technician, I bring a unique perspective that combines language, communication, and healthcare. I understand how meaningful communication can improve trust, accessibility, and patient-centered care. For students interested in healthcare careers, I can incorporate healthcare-related vocabulary, communication strategies, and real-world scenarios that help prepare future professionals to communicate more effectively with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

Lessons may include:

ASL vocabulary and conversational signing
Fingerspelling and number recognition
Expressive and receptive signing practice
ASL grammar and sentence structure
Deaf culture and cultural awareness
Healthcare communication scenarios and professional interactions
Coursework support and exam preparation

My goal is not only to help you learn ASL but to help you become a confident, respectful, and effective communicator. Every lesson is designed so that you leave with practical skills you can immediately apply in school, your future career, healthcare settings, and everyday conversations.

In addition to ASL I also offer tutoring in Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, and foundations in Criminology. Whether you're preparing for an exam, completing coursework, or looking to strengthen your foundation, each lesson is personalized to your goals and learning style.
