Learn Sign Language from an Exceptional, Passionate, Enthusiastic, Experienced and Terrific Teacher

I was a student in Dr. Jonah American Sign Language Level 1 class at PCC in the summer 2024 term. I had long been intrigued by ASL, but was hesitant to jump into something so new and different for which I had no pressing need. I am glad I finally enrolled; Dr. Jonah was the perfect teacher for me. I have seldom had an instructor - in any subject - who was as joyfully enthusiastic and engaging. I looked forward to, and attended, every class during the semester, and in retrospect am astonished at how much I learned. Dr. Jonah carefully structured each class, introducing and reinforcing each new word or expression, patiently and happily answering every question posed, and giving each student individual attention and encouragement in the "practice sessions" that followed. The "no speaking aloud" format was a great pedagogical "forcing function", and the video recordings he made available after each class were invaluable in reviewing and clarifying the material during the ensuing week. As a result, I am now able to make basic conversation with confidence and have a new appreciate for the ASL language and culture. I was pleased to see that Dr. Jonah is teaching a Level 2 class in the fall term; I did not hesitate to enroll.

I've known Jonah for almost two and a half years now. He brought me from just knowing the ASL alphabet and a few basic signs to being comfortable having conversations in ASL. I would definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to learn ASL

Dr. Eleweke has instilled a motivation in me that I thought directly through his teaching. I never felt like he judged my signing, my mess ups, my questions, or my work. He encouraged me to push myself not give up. Dr. Eleweke maintained the belief that we would all be fluent one day and his confidence is inspiring. Through learning with Dr. Eleweke, I have seen a great balance of learning through humor, example, creative expression, personal stories, and finding community. He continues to help me find ways to practice sign outside of the class room. He also personalizes his connection with his students through check ins, remembering birthdays, allowing time for personal needs, and encouraging us to make learning Sign Language fun rather than a chore. If I see that Dr. Eleweke is the professor of a required class, I will always choose his option over alternative ASL professors. Thank you for all you do Dr. Eleweke!!

I have taken two years of American Sign Language courses. Jonah has been my professor for all of them. I have other options, but his teaching style works well for me. He has been very patient and supportive of my education in ASL and he brings a bit of humor to the class as well. His easy going personality coupled with his supportive teaching style has made this learning experience great!

I have been learning with Jonah for (I think) about 2 years now, and it has been an absolute pleasure! I look forward to ASL every week! He is an excellent educator, meets you where you are at with ASL, and is very patient, friendly and flexible. I would recommend Jonah to anyone looking to strengthen their ASL skills.

I've been taking ASL lessons from Jonah for almost 2 years now and it's been a great experience. He is very reliable in scheduling, flexible if I can't make a lesson (e.g., when I'm traveling) and just a fun, kind person to get to know. Very patient and encouraging, too, which has really helped me become more confident in ASL.
In the time I've been taking lessons from him, I've progressed from a complete beginner to being comfortable chit-chatting about every day things in ASL. The lessons are a great mix of learning vocabulary, grammar and deaf culture and as I've progressed also free chit-chat to become more comfortable singing freely.
I cannot say enough good things about Jonah and I think you'll enjoy the lessons as much as I have.

Jonah has given virtual ASL lessons to my eleven-year-old daughter for six months. He is patient, methodical, and has a great introductory curriculum for sign language. He is really good with children, meeting them where they are and recognizing their short attention spans online. He makes the lessons interactive and engaging. I would highly recommend Jonah!

Jonah is a great trustworthy teacher because he has helped me learn ASL, I have had the opportunity to take his class several times. He is patient and has a great teaching style that helps you understand and communicate in sign language while also teaching deaf culture. He is very humorous and I would highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in American Sign Language.

My 15yo son wanted to learn ASL for a school project. He’s learning so much and enjoying it that he’s kept up for over 2 years.
Jonah is wonderful with him and flexible- as teenagers aren’t the most organized.
