About Christien
I currently teach several students from 5 years old up to mature adults.
After passing my Grade 5 Practical as a teenager and Grade 5 Theory (Distinction), I continued my own independent study, and have now played for 17 years.
I have a current DBS.

Music is all about storytelling. It`s not simply `playing` notes, it`s about telling a story that affects your audience and leaves them with changed emotional feelings, whether that be joy, melancholy, confusion, fear etc.
So whilst I adapt the lessons to suit the needs of each individual student, my aim is to create an open and fun environment that makes learning enjoyable, whilst always coming away a stronger musician. In a typical classical exam you`ll get 90% from a perfect technical performance, but if the dynamics that bring the story of the piece to life aren`t there, you won`t get the final 10%.
I actively look to enter all of my students into the official ABRSM or Trinity Exams, depending on their style and goals, although some students simply want to learn to play and have fun as it`s been their dream from childhood, and others just want to learn to play their favourite songs that they can sing to in their spare time.
I teach and encourage students to enjoy all styles of music, from Classical, Jazz and Samba, to Musical Theatre, Pop and R&B. Once students knowledge has reached around the Grade 3 mark (with theory), I often then look to start teaching improvisation. This has been my approach during my entire 7 years of teaching.
I hold an Enhanced DBS.
