Find out more about Rayan

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in science and medicine began during my teenage years after experiencing the impact of the Syrian conflict on my family and my community. Seeing the importance of compassionate, evidence-based healthcare inspired me to pursue biomedical science and, ultimately, graduate-entry medicine.
My interest in private tutoring has been sparked ever since I was studying at high school, from helping my siblings to friends. I realised I genuinely enjoyed helping students overcome challenges and build confidence, especially in science and maths. Over the past few years, tutoring has become more than just a job; it has been incredibly rewarding to see students achieve grades they once thought were out of reach. I enjoy adapting my teaching to each student's learning style and helping them develop both knowledge and confidence.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily teach biology, chemistry and mathematics, drawing on my background in Biomedical Science and my current studies in Graduate Entry Medicine. I particularly enjoy topics that help students understand why things happen rather than simply memorising facts. In biology, I love teaching human physiology, genetics and microbiology, while in chemistry I enjoy explaining organic chemistry and how chemical principles apply to medicine and everyday life.
I also enjoy helping students develop problem-solving skills in maths and showing them different ways to approach challenging questions. The topics I find less exciting are those that rely heavily on rote memorisation, but I see that as an opportunity to make them more engaging by using real-life examples, diagrams and active recall techniques. My aim is always to help students build confidence and develop a genuine understanding of the subject.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Throughout my education, I have been fortunate to have teachers who believed in me, particularly after I moved to the UK and was adapting to a new language and education system. Their patience, encouragement and willingness to explain concepts in different ways gave me the confidence to succeed academically.
Those experiences shaped the kind of tutor I want to be. I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing confidence in their own abilities.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe a good tutor is knowledgeable, patient and adaptable. Every student learns differently, so it's important to explain concepts in a way that suits their individual learning style and pace. A good tutor should also be encouraging, helping students build confidence rather than fear making mistakes. Finally, being reliable, well-prepared and genuinely invested in a student's progress helps create a positive learning environment where they can achieve their full potential.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One experience that has stayed with me was tutoring a GCSE science student who had little confidence and believed they simply "weren't good at science." Rather than focusing only on getting the right answers, we worked on understanding concepts step by step and celebrating small improvements. Over time, their confidence grew, and they achieved a grade they never thought was possible. That experience reminded me that success in science is not just about ability; it is about having the right support, encouragement and learning approach. It reinforced why I enjoy teaching and why helping students gain confidence is just as rewarding as helping them achieve good results.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning how to study efficiently rather than simply working harder in preparation for a career in medicine. The volume of medical knowledge is vast, and I initially found it difficult to balance understanding complex physiological and pathological concepts with memorising the detailed factual information required. Over time, I developed effective study techniques such as active recall, spaced repetition and practice questions, which made managing the demands of medical learning much more achievable. This experience has helped me appreciate the importance of adaptable learning strategies in medicine, and it will support me in coping with the ongoing challenges of medical training.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about both teaching and medicine because they share a common goal: helping people reach their potential. I find it incredibly rewarding to break down complex ideas into something clear and accessible, whether that is explaining a scientific concept or helping a student gain confidence in their abilities. Beyond teaching, I am particularly interested in human biology and healthcare, which is why I am pursuing medicine. I hope to combine these passions throughout my career by continuing to educate, mentor and support others alongside my clinical work.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)

What makes me a Superprof is my ability to combine strong subject knowledge with patience, empathy and adaptability. Having studied Biomedical Science and now Graduate Entry Medicine, I understand both the academic challenges students face and the importance of building confidence alongside knowledge. I tailor every lesson to the individual, encouraging questions and creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. My goal is not only to help students achieve better grades, but also to help them become more independent, curious and confident learners.
