Hi, I'm a Spanish teacher and I love teaching it! I've studied sociology and I've a true appetite for languages and how to teach them! I speak five languages and I enjoy the process of learning new languages and cultures ;) From the very first experience I've collected giving lessons to foreigners in Barcelona, I felt how passionate it is and how rich is the journey of teaching. I've been teaching in Spain and now I'm teaching remotely in the U.S.A. and Bolivia, especially to American students and adults. My lessons are fun and creative. I usually start from the expectations and interests of my students in order to tailor an entertaining lesson for them. YouTube videos, songs, interesting articles and grammar tips are always included in my 60 minutes of learning journey! Are you planning a trip around Spain or an Erasmus experience and you want to be prepared? Or, are you interested in the Spanish cuisine and culture? If so, let's schedule a lesson to get a taste of what an authentic Spanish experience is. Fun, creative and easy speaking! My motto is: "Los más difícil es empezar!"

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

When it comes to Spanish, I must thank my Spanish professor José who accompanied my learning journey when I first moved to Barcelona. By teaching me traditions, songs, and local customs, he helped me to understand Spanish culture and integrate into the Barcelonese society.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

As for Spanish culture, which I was introduced to as a young adult, the most emblematic figure for me is La Veneno, one of the first transgender women to become widely known in Spain. Distinguished for her spectacular appearance and profane humour, she embodies Spanish inclusivity when it comes to gender from the perspective of typical Andalusian warmth.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

In Spain, there are several traditions I am fascinated with and they depend on the Autonomous Community in which you are. My favourite is the tradition of “the twelve grapes”. According to the tradition, on December 31st, those who eat their twelve good-luck grapes in time with the twelve tolls of the bell will have a prosperous new year.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Spanish is also the language of art, music, and literature. In my case, Spanish was a bridge to connect me with the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean: Spain and South America.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

In Spanish, verbs can be challenging and full of exceptions. Reading small texts and books tailored to your level helps to start recognising exceptions and enlarge your vocabulary. It’s always better to learn new words and verbs in a context that makes sense for you.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I first moved to Spain, I didn’t know Spanish at all. I tried my best without having any background and I soon realized that I needed a Spanish school. The funny anecdote that led me to a Spanish course was when I realized that “embarazada” means pregnant in Spanish. By that time, several people were convinced I was pregnant every time I was acting a fool!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

When I moved to Barcelona, I started organizing trips with my family to iconic places such as Andalusia and the Canary Islands. As the only one speaking Spanish, I got the confidence of leading big groups by translating and explaining tastes and traditions.

  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Knowing five languages and having learned them at different stages of my live is a great help. Being proficient in Italian, English and Spanish helped me to guide my students through the journey of language. I am often able to explain the differences between my students’ mother tongue language and the new one. I find creative tools to memorize vocabulary and grammar rules and tailor my students’ class to their own interests.
Just like for good pasta, the secret ingredients are patience, creativity, and encouragement!
