History is the ability is to know what happened, why it was significant, and whether there is contemporary relevance. For example: Most assume the Declaration of Independence occurred on July 4, 1776, the Emancipation Proclamation freed the enslaved, and 46 people have been president of the United States. Are these all true? What if any is the significance? Do the answers have any contemporary relevance?

My teaching method emphasizes student being comfortable. It is the only way students can realize subject answers for themselves. Knowing the Declaration of Independence occurred on July 4, 1776 (this is actually incorrect) but understanding "why" its significant and that unlocks learning.
