About Thiyanen
I am a friendly and approachable Mathematics tutor who focuses on making students feel confident in their ability, regardless of their starting point. I have around a year of tutoring experience and have taught over 10 students across GCSE, A-level and TMUA preparation.
I have achieved A* grades in both A-level Mathematics (295/300) and Further Mathematics (298/300), as well as 237/240 in GCSE Mathematics and 156/160 in GCSE Further Mathematics. I am currently studying Discrete Mathematics at the University of Warwick.
I take my students' progress seriously and adapt my teaching to suit each individual. My students have achieved significant improvements, including GCSE Mathematics from D to A, A-level Mathematics from Fail to B and D to A, and TMUA scores from 3.0 to 6.7. I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing confidence in their mathematical ability.

I have around a year of experience tutoring GCSE and A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, as well as preparing students for the TMUA. I currently study Discrete Mathematics at the University of Warwick and achieved A* grades in both A-level Mathematics (295/300) and Further Mathematics (298/300). I also achieved 237/240 in GCSE Mathematics and 156/160 in GCSE Further Mathematics.
My lessons are usually 1–2 hours depending on the student's needs and preference. I structure lessons around the student's specification, starting by teaching and explaining the relevant content before regularly testing their understanding through active recall. Rather than talking for long periods, I ask questions throughout the lesson to make sure the student is actively thinking about and retaining what they have learnt.
Once we have covered a section of content, we work through exam-style questions together before the student attempts questions independently while I supervise and provide guidance where needed. I also include recap questions from previous lessons to encourage students to continually revise older material, and set homework so that they can practise and reinforce what they have learnt.
A major focus of my teaching is helping students become more accurate and efficient. I work with students to identify and reduce common "silly mistakes", including teaching them ways to check their answers using their calculator, change how they approach certain questions, and develop quick and reliable methods for solving problems. I also help students improve their exam technique, including managing their time effectively when completing full papers especially for TMUA.
For more challenging questions, I encourage students to recognise patterns and develop the ability to approach unfamiliar problems from different angles. My aim is not just to teach students how to answer questions they have seen before, but to help them develop the confidence and problem-solving skills to tackle questions they have never encountered.
I have seen strong results from my tutoring, including students improving from D to A in GCSE Mathematics, Fail to B and D to A in A-level Mathematics, and 3.0 to 6.7 in the TMUA. I have also built a client base of 10+ students, with over half coming through word-of-mouth referrals.
Most importantly, I try to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, including questions they might otherwise be afraid to ask. I adapt my explanations and teaching style quickly depending on the student and focus on making sure they genuinely understand the material rather than simply memorising a method.
