About Nick
I have a Double First in English and History, a Masters and PhD in History from the University of London. My PhD was on the History of Science.
I have been tutoring GCSE and A-Level students to examination success for well over fifteen years. Over that time, I've helped many students who were struggling with their grades often because college history teachers never have enough time to focus on individuals. My approach is relaxed and informal and I'm always looking out to de-mystify exam jargon and historical concepts.
I've also had a lot of experience helping students re-take their history GCSE or A-Levels especially if their confidence has taken a knock. I'm good and building student's written abilities, as well as historical knowledge, by emphasising the importance of practice and reflection on past-paper performances.

My name's Dr Nick and I'm a retired history tutor with a great deal of experience at helping students succeed at GCSE, AS- and A2-Level courses in Modern History, Classical Civilisation, Philosophy and Politics. In terms of my History teaching background, before semi-retirement, I was a Tutor in Modern, Classics and Ancient History at several well-known London Independent Sixth-Form Colleges. My tutoring expertise is tailored towards examination techniques for specific units, in both GCSE and A-Level syllabuses, to help candidates improve exam performance by focusing on key techniques: breadth study, depth study, interpretation, source assessment, as well as Coursework support. I've plenty of experience with the following GCSE and A-Level boards: Edexcel, AQA, ORC and CIE. I have also been an examiner for the AQA board in History.
If you're starting out on your GCSE History or A-Level History course, but feel you're not getting enough exam experience or feedback from practice papers, I'm here to help with advice about mark schemes, higher grade boundaries and exemplar answers. You'll see a real improvement in your grades if you are prepared to work with me and follow my prescription for you (tailored for your abilities/interests and your ultimate goals).
My tutoring is exam-based and syllabus led. Once we've located your course and the particular units you wish to improve on, I set past papers for you to answer. Once you submit, you then get back: detailed, written feedback with marking, annotation on technique and a separate sheet of unit-specific "goodies" for you to revise up before examination day.

Dr. Nick helped me a lot by understanding what errors I have made with my history essays and tells me exactly where I should improve. He has strived to make my skills much better than they were before. He is a very professional tutor.
I have used a number of tutors for my 7 children before and Nick is exceptional. He puts a great deal of time and thought into lesson preparation to ensure that my son gets really valuable help and support. The detailed feedback he gives on written assignments is excellent and he focuses on where he can really add value (exam technique and essay technique) rather than simply on reciting facts. I would not hesitate to recommend him.

My rates are higher than average prices but that's because I focus on a few things (GCSE and A-Level History exam success) and teach these few things very well. I do not offer curriculum support for school-aged pupils as this is not my area of expertise. However, students studying GCSE or A-Level History at the higher levels will appreciate the extra depth and breadth of subject knowledge I can bring to the tutorial, as a post-doctoral qualified historian, as well as experienced subject tutor and exam marker.
