About Charles
I am a PhD in Biochemistry, and have over a decade in biologic sciences, but becoming comfortable with the vast amount of information did not come easy to me. I understand the struggle of processing the massive amount of concepts and the feeling of drowning in a sea of textbooks, and reference papers. I had to work hard to develop the skills to be able to both learn from others and teach myself what I needed to know. I understand the frustration and struggle students face when trying to enter the biologic sciences and I am here to help my students make that transition and to build these skills for themselves. My short term goal for every student is to have them end our sessions feeling like they gained the understanding they lacked at the beginning. In the long term I aim to have my students become independent learners confident in moving forward in their studies.

Understanding the biologic sciences takes time repetition and context. As a tutor I help my students work their way through lectures, assignments, and concepts using as many different approaches as needed for my students to confidently grasp the material.
Students seeking help with lecture material will walk me through their lectures until we find the points of confusion or limits of the student's understanding. From there we work to probe these points and fill in the gaps. This process is iterative and over the course of our sessions the student is encouraged to assume the leadership role in their own education as they gain the confidence to teach the material back to me.
My focus is on building knowledge from a solid foundation. This can mean taking time to review first principles, provide historic context, or use examples from my students' experiences. At each stage I encourage my students to take an active role in their education.
In my experience nothing solidifies information better than the experience of teaching a subject. I challenge my students to teach their material to me. I work to clarify and improve their ability to explain each topic until they can do so independently.
For students who require assistance on homework assignments or test preparation, I provide the same tactic. Students should be prepared to drive these conversations to the best of their ability as I fill in gaps in their understanding and help them reach not only the correct answer, but understand the way the question may have led them to the wrong answer, or why other answer choices were incorrect.
I have over 8 years experience tutoring students from High School, Undergraduate, and Medical school.
