About Francis Ryan
I am currently a Biology and Music student at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. I am in my fourth year. After college, I have aspirations in pursuing a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (my career options are flexible right now--working in academia or as a scientist in the industry). I am passionate about the biological sciences, and I hope to spread that to you soon! I have had one semester's worth of tutoring experience (at a middle school level) and I've had 3.5 years of research experience.
In the Fall 2017 semester, I volunteered as a tutor for a middle school classroom designed for students who were struggling with classwork. I helped about 2-4 students during my time, usually with math. Fortunately, the students I mentored had progressed in their understanding of what they learned. Based on this experience, I've learned to be patient when it comes to teaching someone in understanding a concept thoroughly. Tutoring has also helped me communicate problem-solving efficiently. I believe in helping students grow to their full potential.
Although I haven't tutored much, I can bring transferrable skills from my research experience. These can be skills like teaching (I had to teach a fellow lab colleague how to use electrophysiology technology), problem-solving (in which I had to troubleshoot coding experiments), and communicating science for a lay audience (during research poster presentations and proposals).

As a peer tutor for Biology, my teaching approach would be to promote active learning in lessons. We'll be doing some meaningful activities that will help you reinforce the subject! In my lessons, the main textbook I will reference is Biology 2e - Open Stax. The textbook provides a quality presentation of biology's essential concepts. It also provides great review questions in each chapter. In the lesson, we will focus on the topic(s) that you need help on. I will go over any questions you have, and I will have some activities for you! This can include doing some review questions or creating visual diagrams. In addition, I'm also happy to offer guidance in study skills and success strategies for the biology subject. My philosophy is that having effective study skills allows people to engage in learning material in a positive way.

Details
My first lesson with you will be free and it will be 45 minutes. This is an opportunity for me to get to know you better, for me to talk about lesson expectations, and for you to decide if you want to work with me in the future. After that, the second lesson and onwards will be $16 per 60-minute (1 hour) lesson that we do together. If you need to cancel a lesson for any reason, please contact me at least 24 hours prior to our usual meeting time. I'd be happy to schedule another day that can work for both of us. You will not be charged for the lesson you had to cancel.
