About Emily

My name is Emily Manzano, I am 19 years old, and I am an undergraduate student at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. I am an English major and a Spanish minor. I have always been very interested in the English language as well as classic American literature. With past experiences tutoring, I have not tutored through a company like SuperProf, but I have tutored on my own. I have experience tutoring children on subjects like English, relating to literature and grammar. I have helped many of these children sharpen up their reading and writing skills to help them analyze and understand literature better, as well as becoming better writers.

Something a lot of students have trouble with is understanding poetry, especially classic poetry, which is harder to read, as it uses outdated English language. When it comes to teaching this type of poetry and plays, something like Shakespeare, I like break it down for students. Something I like to do is create a mini dictionary, created by scanning the piece of writing for words we do not understand. Once we write these words down, we can then compare them to words that are more familiar to them. This way, students are exposed to a new word, which helps broaden their vocabulary, but they also associate this word with a word they already knew, making it easier for them to remember it in the future. After having this mini dictionary done, we can now move on to actually breaking down the piece of poetry line by line. When we analyze a story, poem, or play line by line it makes it easier for students to understand what the author is trying to say, literally and figuratively. Although this is a process that does take a bit of time, it is worth it, because I find that taking the time to sit down with students and explaining it to them makes them feel understood, supported, and special. This is something very important to me, and I make sure all students feel understood and supported by their tutor. I also always tell students that if the book is theirs, they are more than encouraged to write in it. Books are meant to be used not only looked at. When students write down notes in their books, they are writing down their current train of thought, which helps me understand how they think and read, and it also helps them fully digest what they are reading.
