About Daniel
About me:
I did a BA Politics degree at SOAS/LSE, and an MSc in Cognitive and Decision Sciences at UCL, focusing on the intersection between politics and psychology. I live and breathe politics with an in-depth knowledge of both the Edexcel and AQA A level Politics curriculums and expertise on the Middle Eastern and European politics. I have also conducted academic research on these topics. I contributed to a paper - The Crime-Terror Nexus in Austria and Hungary - exploring the connection between crime and terrorism in Hungary and Austria. Furthermore, I also presented at the LSE's European Institute on the topic of "The New Right and The New Left: Continuity, Rapture and the Politics of Emotion in Europe".
Throughout my academic career, I have acquired several learning techniques that may accelerate and make learning more fun. My favourite is a set of memory techniques that are especially handy to commit names, dates, events and connections between them to the long-term memory. At my best, I was able to memorise 50 brand new historical years in 5 minutes, with an excellent recall the next day and even a week later.
Outside of tutoring, I am passionate about rock climbing, percussion instruments, and I am also developing an indie game.
Tutoring experience:
I have delivered over 125 hours of A level Politics (Edexcel and AQA) tutoring sessions to individuals and small groups. In the process, I have developed engaging ways of delivering the curriculum (for example, creating an interactive map for explaining the UK electoral systems and using a set of memory techniques to help tutees learn the Bill of Rights). Working with a wide array of students helped me develop the flexibility to tailor my sessions so that they can be the most useful to each of my tutees. Alongside A level politics tutoring, I have also been working with two UK charities, assisting students with A level Psychology and English.
I have also spent a summer volunteering in Egypt, that had a considerable impact on my tutoring style. I taught a dozen 12-15 years of Egyptian students about sustainability. I was responsible for preparing the content of the classes as well as delivering them. As this was my first experience teaching adolescence, I soon realised that their attention span was limited to 20 min, so since then, I make sure to balance the delivery of the content with interactive tasks.
Besides tutoring in an academic setting, I have spent several years teaching how to play percussion instruments (especially darbuka). I gave at least 100+ one-to-one and group sessions in Denmark, Malta, Egypt and Hungary. Such experience made me particularly attentive to individual learning needs and challenges.
Tutoring approach:
Getting to know each student – setting clear expectations – engaging with them – maximising their potential
1) I always make sure to get to know the students before tutoring them. I am especially interested to discover their motivation, their level in the subject, their learning objectives and what they struggle with in particular.
2) I use a very basic, results-oriented structure for my classes: setting expectations and learning objectives at the beginning of each class and reviewing them at the end of the class.
3) I like to make my tutoring sessions as engaging as possible, by frequently asking questions and adding interactive tasks to ensure that the student has properly understood and processed the material.
4) I believe that these pillars serve as a strong foundation for maximising the potential of each student.
