I studied Economics, so when A Tale of Two Cities landed on our reading list for a compulsory Classics module, I was honestly dreading it. Dickens' Victorian English felt like a wall — long, winding sentences, unfamiliar vocabulary, and a narrative structure I couldn't quite hold together in my head. I reached out to Amruta not really knowing what to expect, and she completely changed how I experienced the book.
She broke the text down piece by piece rather than just summarising it for me, which is what I actually needed. We went through key characters and their motivations in real depth — why Sydney Carton makes the choices he does, how Dickens builds sympathy and contrast between characters, and what the historical backdrop of the French Revolution was actually doing to the story. She'd point me back to specific passages and walk me through the language itself, so I wasn't just being told what a scene meant, I was learning how to see it myself.
What stood out most was her patience. I asked what probably felt like very basic questions, given I'd never studied literature formally, and she never made me feel behind for it. By the end, I wasn't just able to get through the exam — I actually understood and, somewhat to my surprise, enjoyed the novel.
