I have worked closely with Durgaprasad (Durga) for several years in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, in courses at both the 2nd and 4th Year level.

As a teaching assistant, he has been extremely reliable and responsible. His grasp of a wide range of content is highly-impressive and he is always well-prepared for tutorial sessions, familiarizing himself fully with the material and potential student-misconceptions beforehand.

In his interactions with students he is always patient and friendly, seeking to understand where each student is experiencing difficulties, and adjusting his approach to suit each individual. He is also reflective, innovative and creative in his teaching, continuously trying to find ways to improve and refine his practices.

As senior teaching assistant for the 4th Year Design Project, a largely administrative role, he demonstrated outstanding organizational abilities, dealing smoothly and efficiently with all the logistics required in a complex course, and removing this arduous load from the academic staff on the course. He also provided several very useful suggestions on how to improve the running of the course in future (e.g., a structured communication channel that would not change from year to year) illustrating his desire and ability to improve system efficiency.

In summary, I believe Durga's work-ethic, interpersonal and organizational skills, and passion for teaching make him a superb tutor.
