About Deepa

Hi, I am Deepa Maurya, an aspiring Theoretical Physicist.
I have done my Master's Thesis on Quantum Field Theory in Curved Space under the guidance of Dr. Sachin Jain, a String Thoerist at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune from 2024 to 2025. At present I am a Research assistant with Dr. Kinjalk Lochan at IISER Mohali working on Quantum Cosmology and High Energy Physics.

Here's my LinkedIn profile: (concealed information)

My Short CV:
I have done Research and Reading projects at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai and TIFR-Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore and TIFR- HBCSE Mumbai in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics as a Visiting Summer Research Student. Attended conferences (national at TIFR International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bangalore and international at CMRS, Italy) on Foundations and Geometry of Quantum Physics. I have been selected for the MTTS 2015 (Mathematics) and PTTS 2015 (Physics) training and talent search camps funded by the Higher Education Boards of India. I have been a National topper (Top 1%) in National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) 2016 organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers and have been a State Topper of Maharashtra in NGPE 2015. I have earned scholarships on state level in school and college level during my undergraduate studies in Mumbai at Kelkar College, University of Mumbai (2013-2016). I have done my Master's in Physics from University of Pune (2023-2025). I was enrolled at IISER Mohali for my Integrated PhD in Physics (2016-2019) but the program remains incomplete due to personal reasons.

I’m passionate about exploring Physics across different length scales and systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. What fascinates me most is how physics sharpens critical thinking—not just in solving theoretical problems but also in approaching everyday life with clarity.

By being my student, you become my teacher—helping me question my knowledge as deeply as I help you question yours.

I always have time to talk about life, learning and everything in between.

I approach teaching as a dialogue—an interview of sorts—aimed at encouraging students to recognize and reflect on their own study methods. This process fosters self-awareness in learning. Ultimately, articulating what you’ve learned in your own words becomes your most honest critic.

Details

900/hr is for High School students and 1200/hr for undergraduate courses.
Charges for International Students begin from 2000/hr onwards.
Charges vary depending on the class requirements if something very specific is requested.

I will not charge any fees until and unless we are in sync with my teaching and your learning pace as well as method. Come with curiosity and hard working attitude towards building an intuition for the subject.

I am flexible with timings and charges. My charges don't necessarily apply on an hourly basis. We can always discuss Physics and Mathematics outside of the regular hourly classes with no additional cost. The additional cost is Curiosity and Discipline, just prepare yourself for that.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

I was always fascinated by how systems with large degrees of freedom work over both the large and small scale. The first hit is usually when one discovers the wave-particle duality which states that a given physical system can be represented by both its particle as well as wave nature. The modern language of doing physics then centres on identifying a quantity that can describe both these natures through the unifying concept of a field.
The first place where this became a central idea was the subject of Statistical Physics which introduced how the distinction can be blurred when one can only measure macroscopic properties of the large collection of states available through experiments and not the microscopic labelling describing particle like concepts such as position. Probabilty then is a natural language attesting to the macroscopic variables one can measure. Hence I was naturally attracted to the theory of small scale which is Quantum Mechanics and subsequently Quantum Field theory, and the theory governing at large scales which is General Relativity. The underlying mechanisms in both the theory is complementary thus presenting the breadth and depth of exhilarating challenges one could learn from as an aspiring theorist.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

Chandrashekhar Subramanyam travelled roughly 80kms every week to teach a class of only 2 students. Both the students went on to become Nobel laureates. The commitment to teaching is the most sacred job, imparting major changes in one's learning journey. I am similarly indebted to my teachers and friends who believe in me despite the many obstacles my health issues have introduced in my life. It is my prerogative to give it back to others.
  • How does your work help society?

My social volunteering work thus far has comprised animal rescue and Tree plantation along with educating the masses on no-cost tree plantation methods such as stem grafting and stem propagation as opposed to purchasing saplings from a nursery. My emphasis has always been on creating an atmosphere where we contribute to society without monetary gain, focusing instead on living in a way that allows us to participate in the well-being of others, whether living or non-living.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

Prof. Kumaresan, formerly the Math HOD at the University of Hyderabad, relentlessly works to educate university students from less privileged backgrounds across the nation. He has done this work for the past 25 years and I couldn't be more grateful to him for being a part of his program and introducing me to this world of service. This world has impacted so many like me who couldn't afford a good education during early childhood as the University system in India is largely faulty. It is called the Mathematics Training and Talent Search camp.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I enjoy reading Psychology and try my best not to take things personally. I am a big time fan of American TV sitcoms full of nonchalant characters and incredible banter. So yes, I love socialising and new experiences but not so much that they disturb my sleep. I have been wanting to write my own script someday and hopefully I can do it even if I lose my teeth by 70, since I don't need them for writing anyway. I enjoy tricking people. For example my favourite opening line on dating apps is whether our common interests include making cute babies with curly hair. You are free to imagine all the responses, an algorithm is already placed behind it. I can go on siiting here on my desk whole day working and god I am on of those characters who plans a lot of fantasises in her head but at the end of the day chooses to circle back to Physics and Math. I wish I could be different sometimes. Well just another wish. I do aim to be a good educator above all, and that remains my most favourite hobby. I believe our teaching should extend beyond just the subject matter; it must encompass every other aspect of life. Therefore, there isn't a compartmentalized answer to my hobbies outside of teaching, if you can follow.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

Find the best critiques to scrutinize your work and then work hard, very hard. One should ideally always look out for people who can be both a coach and a fan.
