I would explain to the student that learning English can open many doors in business, relationship building, and life. As a professional it is my responsibility to instruct a student in ways that benefit his or her life. It is also my responsibility to make certain that I am acting in a professional manner at all times. If the student is a child, I would teach a child differently than I would an adult.

I can convince them that learning English can be fun! It depends on the English capabilities of the student. If the student is not familiar with English, I would start with the basics like name, hello, and work with picture cards to facilitate the learning experience.
For an individual having difficulties with reading English, I would find out what they enjoy like science fiction, fishing, or gardening. Then I would choose several books at their reading level and let them choose the book. From there, depending on their progress, I would choose reading materials that were a little more difficult each time. I would pick out several books that meet their requirements and allow them to choose one of the books. That way the student is learning to read about a subject they love and enjoy and progressing while having fun!
