About Dr Thao
I am a freshly PhD graduate, majoring in Structural Biology and Pharmacology from the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia and am currently working as a research staff at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, UQ. However, apart from research, I also have a passion for teaching. My interest in teaching dates back when I was inspired by my own experiences as a student of passionate and engaging lecturers who strove for excellence in their teaching practices. Thanks to these lecturers, I formed my very first notions on engaging teaching practices, which then have been gradually refined through my tutoring time for the past four years.
In my class, I visualise myself as students’ peer rather than students’ teacher, where our relationship is built out of respect. I welcome and respect students' questions, bringing these questions to the attention of class for discussion and addressing misconceptions if necessary. As I also visualise myself as a guide for the students, I always try my best to provide assistance to all students when needed. Thus, I believe that students can benefit a lot from my class.

I have been a practical demonstrator and a tutor for biochemistry courses at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland, Australia since 2018. I am in charge of group of 12-15 students (17-30) for both undergraduates and postgraduate courses. A typical length of my lesson could range from 1 hour to 3 hours.
My tasks include instructing students through to bridge the gap between their theoretical knowledge and practical framework, assisting students in developing informed views about scientific methodology, and equipping students with specialised technical skills. Irrespective of the year level, I am committed to setting a good example of preparation and behaviour in the class for students as I always prepare fully for the class by being thoroughly familiar with any contents. I am also available and approachable to guide students’ learning by giving immediate helps and feedbacks during the class as well as constructive feedbacks on written assignments.
I believe one of the key element for teaching can facilitate optimal learning environment for student engagement and empowerment. For engagement, besides questions/problems that are already in the learning resources, I incorporate more in-depth questions/problems for students to reflect and develop to adapt in different problems. For empowerment, despite my current limited teaching time, I proactively ask for students’ feedbacks and problems so that I can adjust my teaching to maximize students’ learning and in turn, help students to adjust their study strategies.
