About Oliver

With 5 years of teaching experience and 10 years of learning Hungarian, I offer a unique perspective on mastering the language from the viewpoint of a foreigner. I remember what it was like to not know a single word in Hungarian, which allows me to relate to my students' journey and guide them more effectively.

My lessons follow a curriculum developed by the University of Pécs in Hungary, where I personally studied the language. I also incorporate Hungarian music and movie recommendations to help my students immerse themselves more deeply in both the language and the culture.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

At the age of 9 and my favorite instrument has always been the guitar.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

It's difficult to choose one, but I am always up for listening to some Miles Davis.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Performance wise, it would be a fugue from Bach or some piece with heavy
    poly-rhythm or poly-meter.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think it's the classical guitar. I know that usually people think of the guitar as an easy instrument
and they are right up to a point, if you only want to learn playing basic songs or popular music. But if
you want to bring it to the elite level, it becomes much more demanding. The nature of the instrument
makes it difficult because there are a lot of positioning options that make it more complicate to choose
where to play a certain passage and also the same note on a different string makes a different sound,
so you have to be aware of that as well. In addition, you also have to mute all the unnecessary sound
that the guitar makes, which can be quite demanding. For more instruments playing legato is a natural
way of playing, but the guitar being naturally a staccato instrument it is a challenge to imitate legato on it.
Even the best legato playing on guitar, it may sound as staccato to other instrumentalists.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Having a plan and discipline to realise it.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Julian Bream so I can talk to him about the way he approaches a composition. Robert Fripp so I can
ask him about his right hand picking technique and Igor Stravinsky so I can learn something about
    composition from him.
    7.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

At music school, I once spent hours perfecting a difficult passage, focusing on accuracy and technique.
After I played it, my teacher simply said, “It’s correct, but I don’t hear why it matters.”That comment stayed with me.
Later, when I played the same passage thinking only about the phrase and its meaning, the music finally came alive.
It taught me that technique isn’t the goal—it’s the tool. Music only communicates when technique serves expression.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

My attention to my students and my flexibility to adjust towards their needs.
