Since I myself am a student, I am well aware of how boring topics can get after a point of time. I usually keep my online sessions for around 1 hour 30 minutes with intense parts of the session for 20 minutes followed by short breaks of 5 minutes. I strongly believe that the attention span of a student can last for the maximum of 20 minutes (even during lectures with individual students!) and thereby i believe in keeping breaks.
I believe in teaching the concept diligently and I follow the concept with small oral quizzes to see if the student has understood the concept or not. I tend to use a lot of pictures in my online sessions as it tends to keep the student engaged.
I always start my new lectures by revising with the student with what has been done in the previous class. I also keep a test after a few weeks so that the student retains the topic.
