About Sergey

hello everyone! :) My name is Sergey. I am a musician from Kaliningrad, I also enjoy teaching English - it inspires me to write new songs, to create new stories.

Part One

I was a student at university, an engineer (Kaliningrad State Technical University)but in the 5th year I realized that it was not something my heart had an inclination towards, so I changed the university from technical to the humanities-“Philology and Journalism”-“Art and Humanities”, “Theatrical Directing” and “Spoken English”(Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University).

I’d say that I have a very natural teaching style. I believe that the best learning happens when it comes out of a conversation or a discussion that you’re having. My classes are very conversational but from that conversation we’ll look at grammar, pronunciation and I’ll push your vocabulary to the next level.

My love for the language led me to a master’s degree in Linguistics—'Theory and Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures' in 2020; I defended Graduate Qualifying Paper ‘The Implementation Of The Principle Of Creativity In Teaching English’ which was originally called “The Magic Of Being Creative or Unorthodox Ways of Connecting Your Passion In Life With English”, with distinction.

My classes are fun, creative, and intensive so you learn a lot. But more importantly I understand from my own experience what it’s like to learn a foreign language and how important it is to really use the language and put it into practice; because it is really only by doing that that we learn to recall the words from the memory—intuitively, without thinking—and start building phrases together and create our own sentences to communicate comfortably.

Part Two

Further, my passion for the language resulted in conducting around 4000 interviews as a part of a creative exchange program, developing a skill which allowed me to steer conversationally the connection between student’s interests and passions and their natural acquisition of the new language.

In my lessons you’ll expand your vocabulary and improve fluency.
You’ll learn to speak confidently and communicate effectively.
You’ll receive the practice and correction that you need to succeed in English.

Along the way my love for the language led me to writing 200 songs on my acoustic guitar, composing numerous short stories (creative and fiction writing) as well as starting to work on my first novel “The Incredible Adventure Of Florence”.

If you would like to improve your English, I would love to help you. I hope to speak to you soon. Sergey :-)

Part Three

My friendship with the language began somewhere around 2004 - I accidentally attended the contemporary dance performance of Vitaly Glukhov in the Kaliningrad Museum of History.

After the performance I approached him telling that I was very moved by what I saw, we chatted a little bit and it turned out to be that he was also an actor in the theater and an English teacher as well (who completely changed my perspective on learning and teaching the language)

I went to the audition because I wanted to be part of this amazing world of creative personalities; it went well, and I was accepted and became part of the troupe, to my great happiness really. It was an incredible time for me, when you are in the theater, there are a lot of people there, and they are all creatively crazy...

As you see, my friend, the best way to learn the language is through the story, your story, which is told in a way that reflects your personality and expresses you - your own style and imagination.

You - are the most important thing. Everybody has stories to tell and I can’t wait to hear yours; feel free to contact me anytime, s

“English On the Weird Side of the Bed”

I am a musician, I play the guitar and sing and I also enjoy teaching English - it inspires me to write new songs, to create new stories.

One of the best ways to learn English language is to find a unique way for you to study it and then perfect it—when I’m talking about a unique way, I mean the way that motivates you, challenges you and makes you feel like you can’t get enough of English—and then direct your energy to exploring this particular path.

Some people learn hundreds and hundreds of words and study grammar the whole life but it doesn’t bring the results they are hankering after because it shouldn’t be approached this way…

We all use our vocabulary on a regular basis - simple words that we use everyday. What we need to do is to take this vocabulary that we use everyday, - simple conversations and turn them into English vocabulary—yes!—it will create a foundation from which we are gonna be dancing around and this is gonna be a very strong foundation because everything you speak daily is based on your own style and your own phrases and your own goals.

So, basically, the secret of conquering the English language lies in expressing your personality using this language - as simple as that.

You see, the very mechanics of the language -, they are quite simple - we have words, we have sentences and we have grammar that greases the wheels and a teacher who shows how to use it and puts it all in perspective—“baking the apple pie in the process”—bringing the puzzle together. But it’s just a tool.

It is very similar to the scales that musicians practise until they are blue in the face to make their fingers stronger but it’s not the music, it’s not the song, your song. To create the song you need to put your personality into it.

But what does it mean - your personality? Well, basically it is everything that forms you as a person. Your opinions, your likes, dislikes, which books you prefer, what you think about politics, a meal that you can’t stand, people you gravitate towards and overall everything that makes you, you.

And I don’t wanna seem unhumble but it feels natural to me to bring out the colour of blue, to extract these personal quirks out of unsuspecting folks because I draw it out of myself pretty much on every day basis by writing songs, composing stories, creating music and generally being ‘on the weird side of the bed’, if you know what I mean.

Well, the question is how do we extract this English bubble gum (cockney slang for chum) out of your majesty? - if you please, during the classes (as a matter of fact you don’t need to extract anything out of anyone - your personality is like a shadow, remember? - always with you grudgingly, loyally dragging behind; but for the purpose of this discussion, to illustrate my point I’m using this term), so that we can channel the English language through it.

And the answer is simple - I show you a few techniques - different ways of studying so that you can pick the one that catches your eye, speaks to you and you think works for you best. Then I ask you a question, perhaps an off-beat one that I’m curious to know about—your la-di-da—and while answering we are gonna be forming a discussion, raking through the topics that you are particularly partial to.

During the discussion I’m taking some notes on my notepad; then, at the end of the session, I’m showing you correct versions of the phrases you’ve used.

I’ve noticed that many people struggle with the language because they are afraid of making mistakes—there had always been that school teacher who bit our heads off at the mere sight of incorrection; I think we should make mistakes though—the more the merrier—that’s how we learn, you see. We should fail, yes, and then we can learn from our slips of the tongue, so, the more of these little peccadilloes we create the better we become in the long term as long as we learn from these ickle imperfections.

All in all, my job as a tutor is to tickle the muscle of your curiosity a little bit so that everything that’s on your mind comes out in a charming little form of a new language. So you just can’t stop the music, can’t halt your English ‘blah, blah, blah’, it’s pouring cats and dogs out of you and I’m catching phrases that you are throwing at me, that are but slightly or fatly incorrect and I’m showing you the correct versions at the end of the conversation and explaining the mechanics of the grammar and bringing the varieties of the vocabulary that your particular style is asking for to the table, s June 3, 2023
