If you sent Bitcoin to a scammer, stop any further payments, preserve your transaction details, and contact the exchange or service you used as soon as possible. A confirmed Bitcoin transaction generally cannot be reversed by the sender, but the transaction trail may help you understand where the funds went and what options are available.

If you’ve lost Bitcoin to a scam, Crestforte Intelligence ((concealed information) can examine your transaction trail, assess whether it reveals useful investigative leads, and help you understand what those findings may mean for your recovery options.

Step 1: Stop Any Further Payments

If the scammer is still contacting you, do not send additional Bitcoin to unlock a withdrawal, pay a supposed tax, complete verification, or release funds.

Save the conversation and payment instructions. These details may help establish how the scam happened and connect the payment to the person or platform involved.

If you shared your wallet’s private key or recovery phrase, treat the wallet as compromised. Use a trusted device to secure any remaining assets in a new wallet if you can do so safely.

Step 2: Find Your Bitcoin Transaction

Open your wallet or exchange history and locate the payment. Record the transaction ID, known as the TXID, along with the receiving address, amount, date, and time.

Use a reputable Bitcoin block explorer to check the transaction status and inspect the visible transfer details.

If the transaction is confirmed, the sender generally cannot reverse it. If it is still unconfirmed, do not assume it can be canceled; the available options depend on the wallet or service and how the transaction was created.

If you made several payments, save each TXID separately. This will help you establish the sequence of payments and distinguish the original transfer from later transactions.

Step 3: Contact the Exchange or Service You Used

If you sent the Bitcoin through a centralized exchange, report the scam through its official support channel. Provide the TXID and explain what happened.

Ask whether the exchange can document the incident, review relevant activity, or take any action under its procedures. You can also report the incident to the appropriate law enforcement or cybercrime reporting agency.

If you used a self-custody wallet, the provider may help with technical questions, but it generally cannot reverse a confirmed transaction or directly retrieve funds from the recipient’s address.

Step 4: Preserve Evidence That Connects the Payment to the Scam

Your transaction record shows that Bitcoin moved, but the surrounding evidence helps explain why you sent it and who or what directed the payment.

Keep copies of:

• The TXID, receiving address, amount, and transaction timestamp
• Messages, emails, usernames, and profile links
• The website, investment platform, or service involved
• Payment instructions and promises made before you sent the Bitcoin
• Withdrawal errors, additional payment demands, or related transactions
• Relevant wallet and exchange records

Keep original messages and files where possible. Together, these records provide a stronger starting point for examining the incident than the TXID alone.

Step 5: Find Out What the Transaction Trail Reveals

Once the immediate steps are underway, examine what happened after the Bitcoin reached the receiving address.

The blockchain may show subsequent transfers to other addresses or destinations that warrant further investigation. If multiple transactions are involved, reviewing them together may help establish a clearer picture of the fund movements.

However, tracing Bitcoin does not automatically identify the person behind an address or establish that the funds can be recovered. The available evidence must be assessed to determine whether there are meaningful investigative leads and what they may indicate about your options.

If you’ve lost Bitcoin to a scam, Crestforte Intelligence ((concealed information) can examine your transaction trail, assess whether it reveals useful investigative leads, and help you understand what those findings may mean for your recovery options.

Your Next Move

Start with the TXID, preserve the evidence connecting the payment to the scam, and contact the service you used. You do not need to understand every blockchain transaction before beginning.

The important thing is to establish what happened to your Bitcoin and what the available evidence can tell you. A closer examination of the transaction trail can help clarify the situation, identify possible investigative leads, and give you a more informed basis for deciding what to do next.
