Find out more about Poonam

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for mathematics began during my school years, where I consistently excelled in the subject and later pursued it throughout my academic and professional journey. I started tutoring over 25 years ago and have never stopped since. From teaching in classrooms to one-on-one sessions, helping students overcome fear of maths and find joy in it has been a constant source of inspiration. Tutoring, to me, is not just a profession—it’s a calling.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise in teaching mathematics from Key Stage 3 through to A-level and Further Maths. Topics I particularly enjoy include algebra, calculus, trigonometry, mechanics and statistics. I also love introducing students to mathematical thinking and problem-solving strategies that go beyond exam preparation. I find maths intellectually stimulating, though I understand that not every student feels the same—which is why I tailor each lesson to suit their learning style and needs.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely. I was fortunate to have teachers who not only taught well but believed in me and encouraged me to go beyond the textbook. Their patience, passion, and insistence on understanding rather than rote learning influenced my teaching philosophy deeply. Later, I was further shaped by disciplined mentors who instilled precision and resilience—traits I bring into my tutoring as well.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be empathetic, patient, and adaptable. They should be able to break down complex concepts into simpler parts and connect with the student’s level of understanding. Being encouraging is just as important as being knowledgeable. I also believe strong communication and consistent follow-up with students and their parents builds the trust and accountability essential for progress.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember a student who struggled terribly with A-level maths and had lost all confidence. Through patient one-to-one sessions over a year and motivational feedback—he not only passed his exam but scored a grade he never thought possible. Years later, he contacted me to say he pursued engineering at university, thanks to the confidence maths tutoring had given him. That’s the magic of good teaching—it changes lives.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

As someone with a deep love for mathematics, one challenge I’ve faced is watching students fear the subject unnecessarily. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to make maths approachable and engaging, especially for students who feel they’re “just not good at it.” My challenge has always been to help them shift that mindset and realise that with the right guidance, they can master it.I have always been able to infuse love for maths in my students. With proper guidance and consistent tutoring, many of my students went on do maths related subjects at university.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is my lifelong passion. Whether as a principal, lecturer, or tutor, I’ve always found joy in shaping young minds and unlocking their potential. I also have a strong passion for educational innovation—I’ve developed my own digital learning system (“Digital Edge Learning System”) to support interactive and tech-driven education for children. Blending teaching with technology is something I truly enjoy.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is not just my 25+ years of teaching experience or my qualifications from the University of Cambridge—it’s my dedication to each student’s journey. I’ve mentored top-performing students in national competitions, and led schools as principal. I know how to stretch gifted learners while nurturing those who need more support. I bring structure, warmth, and results. My goal? To make maths enjoyable, meaningful, and empowering for every learner.
