About Cid

About Me

Hi, I'm Cid — a Computer Science and Cognitive Science student at Pomona College (one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country), currently maintaining a 3.85 GPA. I've been teaching and tutoring in one form or another since I was in high school, and it's something I genuinely love doing.

At Pomona, I work as an official CS Teaching Assistant, where I support over 30 students each week through labs and one-on-one mentor sessions alongside the course professors. That role taught me how to explain the same concept multiple ways until it truly clicks — and how to meet each student exactly where they are.

My background in Cognitive Science gives me something most tutors don't have: a deep understanding of how people actually learn. I don't just know the material — I know how to teach it in a way that builds real, lasting understanding rather than short-term memorization.

Outside of academics, I've spent four summers as a lead instructor at a nature camp, managing groups of up to 15 students daily. That experience sharpened my ability to stay patient, keep things engaging, and adapt to different personalities and learning styles on the fly.

Whether you're preparing for an exam, trying to keep up with class, or building skills from the ground up, I'll show up prepared, on time, and fully committed to your progress. My students don't just get through the material — they start to feel confident in it.

My Teaching Method and Techniques

I believe the best learning happens through conversation, not lecture. My approach is built around asking the right questions — guiding students to arrive at answers themselves rather than just handing them solutions. When a student gets stuck, I don't just explain the answer; I break the problem down step by step, figure out exactly where the gap is, and work from there.

I adapt to each student's learning style quickly. Some students need visual diagrams, others need to talk through the logic out loud, and others need to do problems repetitively until the pattern clicks. I've worked with students one-on-one and in group settings, so I know how to read a student's energy and adjust on the fly.

I also keep things low-pressure. Math and CS can feel intimidating — I've seen it firsthand as a CS TA at Pomona College, helping over 30 students through labs every week. My goal is always to make a student feel capable, not overwhelmed. A relaxed student learns faster.

Key techniques I use:

Socratic questioning — I ask leading questions to help students reason through problems themselves
Error analysis — we go through mistakes together to understand why something went wrong, not just what the right answer is
Real-world connections — I tie abstract concepts to things students actually care about to make them stick
Spaced repetition — I revisit earlier material regularly so nothing gets forgotten before a test

A Typical Lesson Plan

Every session starts with a quick check-in: what did we cover last time, and what's coming up next in class or on a test? From there, a typical 60-minute session looks like this:

0–10 min — Warm-up review
A few quick problems or questions from our last session. This reinforces retention and surfaces anything that didn't fully land.

10–40 min — Core concept work
We tackle the main topic the student is struggling with. I introduce or re-explain the concept clearly, then we work through problems together — I do the first one, we do the second one together, then the student tries one independently while I observe and guide.

40–55 min — Practice and challenge
The student works through problems on their own with me available for hints. I gradually increase difficulty to build confidence and stretch their understanding.

55–60 min — Recap and homework preview
I summarize what we covered, flag what to review before next session, and preview what's coming so the student arrives prepared.

What Sets Me Apart

I'm not just someone who is good at the subjects I teach — I have real experience teaching them. As a CS Teaching Assistant at Pomona College, I host weekly mentor sessions, help students through labs, and collaborate with professors to support over 30 students. I know how to explain the same concept five different ways until one lands.

I also bring energy and patience. I've managed 15 kids a day for four summers at a nature camp, taught first-generation college-bound students through HMC Upward Bound, and tutored peers in math throughout high school. I genuinely enjoy helping people learn — it's something I've done consistently since I was 16.

As someone studying both Computer Science and Cognitive Science, I have a deep interest in how people think and learn — not just in the content itself. That background informs how I teach.

And I'm a Brooklyn native, currently home from Pomona College for the summer — so I'm fully available, local, and not going anywhere for the next few months.

Who My Lessons Are For

Best fit:

Middle school and high school students (grades 6–12)
College students in introductory courses

Subjects I teach:

Math — Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB, SAT/ACT Math, Discrete Math
Computer Science — Intro CS, Python programming, AP CS Principles, beginner C++
Statistics — Intro level, including data interpretation and graphing
Test prep — SAT Math, SHSAT Math, AP exam prep (CS, Calculus, Stats)

Especially well-suited for:

Students who feel like they "just don't get it" — I specialize in breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps
First-generation or under-resourced students — I've worked specifically with FGLI students and know how to be a supportive presence beyond just the content
Students preparing for specialized high school exams (SHSAT) or AP exams
Anyone who learns better through conversation than through textbooks alone
