About Andrew
Hi,
I'm Andy, a UK citizen, and for the past 24 years have been involved with ESOL/EFL/EAP/ESAP/IELTS/exam preparation for international students.
For the past 12 years I've mostly been engaged with Chinese undergraduates and postgraduates majoring in law, finance and economics, Internet of Things, arts and humanities, arts and design, electronic engineering, engineering etc.
I have also been an IELTS examiner for around 7 years in 5 countries as well as TOEIC, TOEFL etc.
I have a vast amount of experience teaching adults and university students. Furthermore, I have been involved with the corporate sector in terms of language and skills acquisition, with national and multinational companies.
I enjoy my work and always try to support students' aspirations and goals, and am sensitive to their learning needs.
Although I am quite skilled across a broad range of specific learning contexts, I am also very competent in tutoring more general life skills and language use to meet specific purposes of learning.

My teaching approach is student centred and based on providing plenty of opportunities for language production and feedback. In my opinion, it is through language production and regular feedback that students can really make progress. My main concern is students' success and achieving their goals.
Over many years of teaching many aspects of EFL and addressing all kinds of student needs, I am very confident of my teaching approach and its effectiveness in facilitating student progress and supporting their learning goals. After many years of developing my teaching approach I am very competent across any learning environment/aims, e.g.:
Academic writing and speaking.
Exam English, IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL etc.
Specific academic purposes and specific content, e.g. law, finance and economics, computer science, arts and humanities, design, engineering etc.
Language skills such as presentations and specific work/academic projects.
I do ask students to do homework tasks and preparation for the next lesson. It is very important that class time is used as much as possible to improve the level of students' language production and language use. I like to keep this as interactive as possible and to constantly challenge students' understanding and cognitive patterns/processes.
It is very important to understand that language learning and language skills acquisition is often not just about language, grammar, vocabulary etc., but about the thinking processes that are involved before any language is produced. My point here is that my lessons will often, depending on the skills the student wants to improve, be quite cognitively based. Besides offering language suggestions, vocabulary etc., I also like to work on the specific "rhetorical" purposes or functions of language. I have found through many years of teaching non-native speakers in many different contexts and universities, this approach can actually accelerate the acquisition of language skills and how language is used and applied to different social contexts.
At the beginning of a course with me, my teaching approach might seem quite different, and possibly quite difficult. However, after a lot of research in especially universities in China and the UK, I am very confident it is the most effective way forward in achieving your language learning/language skills goals.
