About Megan

I am a qualified primary (elementary) teacher with two decades of teaching experience. I have worked with children across a wide range of ages, abilities, and educational contexts, both in classrooms and online.

My background in education has given me a strong foundation in child development, learning theory, and effective teaching practice. I hold a postgraduate degree in Educational Studies and place a high value on thoughtful, well structured lessons that support both academic growth and confidence.

As a teacher, I am calm, patient, and attentive. I take time to understand each student as an individual and adapt my approach to suit their personality, learning style, and level of confidence. I aim to create lessons where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas, asking questions, and thinking more deeply without fear of being rushed or corrected harshly.

I have extensive experience teaching international and bilingual students and enjoy working with families from different cultural backgrounds. Clear communication, consistency, and mutual respect are important to me, and I work closely with parents to ensure lessons are a good fit for their child.

I particularly enjoy teaching reading and discussion based lessons, as they allow students to develop not only their language skills but also their ability to think, explain, and engage with the world around them.

About the lesson

I currently have limited availability and I will update my availability as additional times open. I am offering lessons at the following times (UK time):
• Wednesdays 10:30 (45 minute lesson)
• Fridays at 08:30 (30 minute lesson)
• Fridays at 13:30 (30 minute lesson)

My lessons are online one-to-one, discussion based English sessions designed to build strong reading comprehension, clear spoken expression, and confident thinking in children and teenagers aged 7 and above.

I have been teaching since 2006 and completed my primary teaching qualification in 2007 with a 4.0 GPA. In 2018, I earned an MSc in Educational Studies with distinction (Honours). I have extensive experience teaching children online since 2019 and have worked with students from a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds.

I use carefully selected, age appropriate news and current events articles as the starting point for each lesson. These texts provide real world context and naturally encourage curiosity, vocabulary development, and deeper understanding. Depending on a student’s age, level, and confidence, lessons may focus more on guided reading and comprehension or on structured discussion and spoken responses.

My lessons are suitable for:
• children and teenagers aged 7 to 16
• students who want to improve reading comprehension and spoken English
• learners who benefit from discussion rather than rote exercises
• students who enjoy thinking, asking questions, and expressing ideas

Although I work with students at different levels, all lessons follow the same core principles. Students are encouraged to:
• read carefully and accurately
• think independently
• explain their ideas clearly
• respond thoughtfully to questions

My teaching approach is rooted in my background as a qualified primary (elementary) teacher and my postgraduate training in education. Lessons are supportive, structured, and responsive to the individual student rather than worksheet driven or test focused.

In a typical lesson, we may:
• read and explore a short news article together
• clarify vocabulary and key ideas
• discuss meaning, perspective, and implications
• practise expressing opinions in complete, well reasoned sentences

I adapt the level of support carefully. Some students benefit from more guided modelling, while others are ready for open discussion and independent thinking. My role is to challenge students appropriately while ensuring they feel comfortable and respected. This approach is especially helpful for international and bilingual students who want to strengthen higher level English skills such as explanation, inference, and discussion.

Lessons are usually 30 minutes, which works well for maintaining focus and engagement in one to one sessions. Longer lessons can be arranged where appropriate.

These lessons work particularly well as ongoing weekly sessions, allowing students to build confidence, fluency, and depth of understanding over time.
