About Guillermo

I'm a qualified lecturer currently pursuing an MA in Education Leadership at the University of Exeter, having completed my BA in Philosophy, History and Politics. Originally from Madrid, I've made London my home for the past eleven years.

When I'm not teaching or studying, you'll find me writing, hiking through the countryside, or experimenting in the kitchen. I also enjoy occasional acting work - you might have spotted me in an advert or online video!

My diverse academic background and passion for education inform my teaching approach, blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Spanish fluently because I am Spanish-though I am also a teacher, which gives me a deeper appreciation for the language.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character emblematic of the language's culture?

Choosing just one is difficult! Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with countless cultural icons. From artists like Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo to musicians like Rosalía and Shakira, or literary giants such as Gabriel García Márquez and Cervantes-the list is endless.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I've always loved the word 'ojalá'. It originates from the Arabic inshallah, reflecting Spain's rich linguistic history. We use it to express hope for something, even if it seems impossible-there's something beautifully poetic about that.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Spanish is more than just a communication tool-it's a gateway to endless opportunities. Speaking it isn't merely about switching from English in your mind; it's about immersing yourself in its cultural depth, uncovering the stories of millions, and expressing ideas in a way no other language allows.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the learning process?

This varies by learner, but many struggle with Spanish's numerous tenses, moods, and grammatical gender. The key is to embrace mistakes-Spanish speakers are generally very accommodating!

To learn effectively, find what works for you: online or in-person lessons, mnemonics, or contextual learning. Rather than memorising vocabulary lists, focus on practical language-what words do you need in daily life? What conversations interest you? Making learning relevant and engaging is the best way to progress.
  • 6) Can you share a valuable anecdote from your language learning or school days?

Years ago, while studying French, my teacher gave me a list of Spanish words to translate into French. Having not practised French in a while, I improvised by making the Spanish words sound French-and to my surprise, most were correct! This taught me the value of trying: nothing ventured, nothing gained.
  • 7) How has travel helped you deepen your understanding of the language?

Travelling across Spain has shown me the fascinating regional variations in dialects, influenced by local languages like Catalan or Galician. Spanish isn't monolithic-it's a tapestry of cultures, accents, and histories.

Did you know words like canoe, kayak, hurricane, tomato, and potato come from Indigenous American languages, absorbed into Spanish and shared worldwide? Exploring Latin American dialects and themes is a vital part of understanding the language's full richness.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I'm flexible, patient, and experienced in teaching all levels-from young learners to adults, including students with additional needs. I create tailored resources, using diverse methods to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. If you'd like to see for yourself, my first session is free!
