About Christopher

I’m a native British English teacher with more than 20 years’ professional teaching experience. I hold a BA (Hons), an MA, a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I am also an appointed Cambridge English assessor and am responsible for grading student work for a major Spanish language school.

I began my career teaching in the UK college system. Today, I teach international students online. I have taught vice-presidents, CROs, partners, doctors, entrepreneurs and professionals in finance, technology and AI. Corporate clients have included Santander, BBVA, Repsol and K&H Bank.

Alongside teaching, I work as an English language copy editor for a Big Four firm.

What keeps me teaching is simple: progress. I like seeing students become more confident, more capable and more ambitious with their English. The moment they realise how far they’ve come is the best part of the job.

Your English may already be good. My job is to make it better.

I start by finding out what is holding you back. Then we set clear goals and work directly on the areas that will make the biggest difference.

Mistakes are expected. Embarrassment isn’t. I want you to speak freely, take risks and build confidence without feeling judged.

I teach B1 to C2 students, from learners who want greater fluency and confidence to senior professionals and exam candidates. I prepare students for IELTS, Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, TOEFL, university entrance exams, school examinations, interviews, presentations and important meetings. If you simply want to maintain your English through regular conversation, that’s fine too.

My lessons are focused, flexible and built around progress. Weaknesses are identified, targeted and revisited until they improve.

Your first 30-minute lesson is free. Come and see what your English can become.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was born in England and I teach English every day. But more than this, I love my language and was fortunate to have an English teacher who inspired me to write. I'm now a novelist.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I think Winston Churchill for his tenacity; William Wilberforce for bringing an end to slavery (which reflects our positive attitude towards our multicultural society); and Basil Fawlty, who typifies the eccentric British character!
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

My favourite words include: sleazy, inexorable and disparity. Least favourite are those Americanised words which are unnecessary (but which I find myself using, nonetheless.)
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It's the language of business, media, medicine and transport. It has over a million words and can express almost anything.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Phrasal verbs. There are so many of them! Rules that get broken time and time again. The native language of the learner presents its own difficulties. The answer is patience and application on the part of both teacher and learner. And making sure lessons are enjoyable, even when tackling the hard stuff.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I was expelled from school at the age of 12, missed four years of education and ended up with an M.A., becoming a teacher. Never write off the seemingly impossible-or improbable.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living abroad has helped me to realise that the language I took for granted as being easy isn't easy to people from other countries. I believe this has helped me to be a sympathetic teacher and one who adapts his vocabulary and syntax when teaching intermediate-level students.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Passion. Plus a teaching degree and twenty years of experience 😉
