About Ka Yee Julie
Hello! I’m a Cambridge University-educated language specialist, Chartered Linguist & Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and qualified teacher of both English and Chinese with over 15 years of professional experience working with languages every day.
I offer personalised 1:1 lessons in:
• English for everyday communication and professional life
• IELTS preparation (especially Academic IELTS for UK study)
• Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese
Alongside my teaching, I’ve worked for many years as a professional translator and language specialist for prestigious companies including Christie’s and NET-A-PORTER. This means I bring real-world language insight into every lesson – not just textbook knowledge.
I hold:
• a BA degree from the University of Cambridge
• a 120-hour TEFL qualification
• professional training in teaching Chinese from SOAS, University of London
• Chartered Linguist status with the Chartered Institute of Linguists

Every lesson I teach is fully tailored to your current level, learning style, and goals.
Some students want to build confidence in everyday conversation. Others are preparing for exams like IELTS. Others need English for work or life in the UK. Whatever your starting point, we’ll create a clear learning plan that works for you.
All lesson materials are provided, so you don’t need to worry about buying textbooks in advance! Although, of course, you are welcome to use any specific textbooks or material specific to your school/ university curriculum/ target exams.
Depending on your needs and interests, I draw on a carefully selected mix of:
• structured coursebooks and official exam materials
• teacher-designed resources
• real-life materials such as articles, videos and authentic everyday language
This keeps lessons practical, engaging and relevant to your goals.
My teaching style is friendly, supportive and patient – raising two young children to be trilingual has definitely strengthened those skills!
At the same time, I’m very outcome-focused. If you’re working towards a specific target (for example an IELTS score or preparing for study in the UK), we’ll work strategically and efficiently towards that goal together.

I found Ka Yee by reading her book “everyday life in English and Chinese”, which was easy to follow and learn from. I then watched her YouTube videos and thought she would be the best Chinese tutor for me as she was clearly nurturing and non confrontational in her teaching methods. I therefore can’t recommend her enough!
