About Brian

Although I am a Developer by trade, I grew up surrounded by music. My family is heavily involved in Swing, Jazz, Theater, Rock and Stage performances for as long as I can remember. Music is far more than just a serious hobby for me. I am classically trained from the Royal Ontario Conservatory of Music and I currently have a part time music teaching career at a local Music School, as well as a Progressive Rock outfit named Machines Dream that has seen some international appeal. My entire life is rooted in music, and I continue to pursue and study my passion today, I've published several albums, been in countless acts (swing, jazz, rock, metal), went on cross Canada tours with two distinct groups, and I'm currently in negations for a European tour (looking good for 2020).
As a student I have studied Computer Science and Music in tandem, working both careers together, growing them as far as I desire. I've spent 12 years in IT and well over 25 in Music. Both are close to my heart, and I will continue to inspire others to pursue their aspirations, providing them the tools and guidance necessary to achieve their goals.

I am fortunate that my current classroom setting is very intimate. Thirty minutes a student, single student. I teach all ages and currently have a large number of teenage and younger students, all various skill levels and proficiencies.
I am a technique spartan, in that I focus primarily on proper, perfect rudiments to build a solid foundation for the approach of more difficult music. For this study I draw heavily from my years at the Conservatory, well known for its hard edged approach to proper technique. For my classroom, I rely on the Alfred curriculum for some of my lessons, but essentially I spend the first lesson getting to know my students, understanding their desires, interests, level of skill, level of understanding, musical history, etc. I then approach my progress technique as you would a game. Basics first, then slowly increase the difficulty as those basics are mastered and applied to several different scenarios.
Eventually, as the basics are mastered, I create an environment that presents a piece of music to a student with a purpose, either scale study, time signature, etc. The introduction to the concept comes first, and then is applied to the piece, allowing for all of the decisions to be made by the student, asking questions as we work our way through the measures. This is a repeatable process, and leads to good practice routines as the music, theory and concepts become more difficult. I'm not big on testing or homework as I believe those are outdated ideas that simply teach a student how to prepare for a test, rather than foster a love for music and learning. I prefer to measure the success of a student by gauging how well they apply the rudiments and advanced techniques to a cleverly chosen piece of music. However, I do give students worksheets for theory, as well as develop and encourage strong, fun practicing routines.

Scales, Fingering, Hand position, body position, music as a concept, music as a universal physical law
Over the Intro Basics:
Major/Minor scales, Chords, Triads, intro rhythm and note identification, tempo
Standards:
