About Suiyi
Hi there! Looking to train your skills in the English language? Hone your essay-writing and public speaking abilities? Master a literary course or gain a deeper understanding of the written word?
I'm a novelist and a current graduate student at the University of Cambridge specializing in English literature and gender studies. I've been a tutor since 2013--first as a classical violin teacher for elementary/middle school students, then in high school-level maths and literature, and then as a teaching assistant at Williams College (an elite liberal arts school in Massachusetts, USA where I am an alumna).
Elsewhere, I'm a professional writer: my novel, AMERICAN SYMPHONY: OTHER WHITE LIES (Civil Coping Mechanisms Press, 2019) was shortlisted for the prestigious 2018 Fiction Collective 2 Sukenick Prize for Innovative Fiction, administered by the University of Alabama Press. My experiences in the US literary scene, where I was the editor of the acclaimed literary journal WINTER TANGERINE, equips me both with tools for teaching writing as well as editing work.
My passion for the art of discussion and the beauty of thought lights my teaching. As a teacher, I hope to be your conversant, your interlocutor, and your friend--someone with whom you can both feel comfortable and obtain significant, measurable progress. Discussion and debate are central to my teaching practices, which value the importance of critical thinking. Intellectual honesty is a cornerstone as well: what I seek to provide in all of my classes is, first and foremost, an unshakeable understanding of the content of work(s) discussed, and secondly, a deep understanding of the ways that literary works are connected to one another and the contexts in which they're written. Classes will ALWAYS be tailored to address the needs and strengths/weaknesses of the student.
For students who desire to improve their writing, our classes will be structured like a writing seminar: not only will I read and offer feedback on work, but we will work to identify key points of possible improvement, such as conceptual framing, storytelling strategies, or more technical matters such a sentence structure and grammatical usage.
In a technical course like English language acquisition for foreign speakers, I structure my classes systematically. As a student of the Chinese language, I am familiar with models of Chinese and English language pedagogy, which stress the importance of ritual practice and measured progress. My English language courses will tailor the syllabus to the individual needs of the student(s)--all courses will have a mixture of oral practice, written practice, reading practice, as well as a literary component to acquaint the student with the cultural significances of the language.
