About BIRCH
I have been teaching music in a variety of settings. As Music Director in Solvang, for the Santa Ynez Union High School District, I taught Band, Choir, and Mariachi instruments. At Ballard Elementary School all students, grades K-6 were required to take music. I taught K-2 basic singing and percussion with movements; Grade 3 learned the recorder & reading music; Grades 4-5 were instructed in flute, clarinet, horns, & keyboards; Grade 6 students chose their favorite instrument and comprised the Band.

My approach to teaching is hands-on investigatory learning. Students are kept engaged by enthusiastic lessons & listening to their feedback. Interaction between students, teacher, and other students fortify the bond of love of music. Themes are explored. For example, while in Solvang, it was the 50th anniversary of Disneyland. Disney music was taught like "It's a Small World" & "Mickey Mouse" for elementary students. The band featured of medley of songs from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and other Disney movies.
