About Neil
I would love to help and you in getting you where you need to be on your next step journey in illustration. I'm a professional illustrator with over two decades of experience working in the creative industries with ideas at the centre of my practice. I tailor my mentorship specifically for A-Level, Foundation, University students, and Early-Career Illustrators.
A bit about me - I did a Masters in illustration at Central St. Martins School of Art. I have since established a successful career, honing my conceptual thinking over years of practice. My work has been commissioned globally by major newspapers, leading book publishers, and design agencies, including The BBC, The Royal Mail, The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Penguin Books, and M&C Saatchi. I've worked on varied projects ranging from stamps to book covers and food packaging. Along the way, I've received industry awards from Communication Arts, American Illustration, D&AD (Yellow Pencil), Creative Review Annual (Best in Book), the 3x3 Annual (Merit), and The AOI World Illustration Awards.
Throughout my career, I have developed a deep understanding of what it takes to break into the industry and stay relevant. I want to teach because I am genuinely passionate about helping emerging talent bridge the gap between academic study and the professional world. Art education often focuses heavily on technical execution, but I want to pass on a reliable methodology for conceptual thinking and visual problem-solving — giving students the practical tools and confidence they need to take ownership of the blank page and build on creating a standout career.
I strongly believe that encouragement and positive, constructive criticism bring out the best of students' talents and skills. Everybody has a unique visual language and I will help you tap into that magic. As illustrators, we have the incredible possibility to make new worlds and set our own stages.

My lessons focus entirely on the core of successful visual communication: idea generation. I don't just teach you how to draw; I teach you how to think conceptually. I specialise in helping students move away from literal, predictable ideas and master the art of turning a brief into a striking, graphic visual metaphor. Making illustration is an exciting visual problem-solving exercise with limitless possibility. I can help you focus in on your unique approach and visual language.
Sharing your creative work can feel vulnerable, so I maintain a highly collaborative, encouraging, and friendly approach. Our 1-on-1 sessions are structured like supportive industry critiques, focusing on generating ideas through making visual associations in word form, sketching, experimentation, and finding your unique visual solutions without any pressure.
Who These Lessons Are For;
The starting principle for students of all levels is expert guidance in taking the blank page/screen, taking a starting point, either working to a brief, or on a personal project, and establishing a method of generating ideas.
For A-Level / High School Students: With my extensive knowledge of art and design history, I can help you to find the right places to look for inspiration. I will guide you on how to kick-start and tailor your creative process and create work to take to the next level of education.
Foundation Students: Expanding your conceptual thinking and building a standout portfolio for top-tier university applications.
University Students & Graduates: Refining your style and sequencing your work for the contemporary publishing and editorial market. Using my years of experience to give positive constructive feedback and together, edit your images for a top-tier portfolio.
New & Early-Career Illustrators: If you are struggling to bridge the gap between student work and professional commissions, we will focus heavily on industry readiness, finding your unique visual voice, and building a commercial portfolio that actually gets noticed by art directors.
Typical Lesson Length;
Lessons are typically 60 to 90 minutes long. This gives us enough time to comfortably audit where you are, what your goals are, look at sketchbooks/work in progress, brainstorm new concepts together, and set a clear, actionable plan for your next pieces, enabling you to build and add to a portfolio that best showcases your talent and skill.

I have worked with Neil for over 15 years managing usage rights to his existing illustrations. Neil has the ability to summarize complex concepts into an illustration that draws in viewers. We have sold hundreds of his images to clients worldwide who value his professionalism. - John
I have known Neil professionally as an illustrator for over a decade. He's an intelligent, witty, and reliable creative. He never lets me down when commissioned for a tricky and often sensitive brief, and I imagine he can pass on a lot of relevant and professional knowledge to young creators. I hope he doesn't get too busy to be unavailable for further commissions from myself.
I have represented Neil regarding his illustration practice for around 30 years. His work attracts commissions from high profile clients worldwide and his work invariably pleases clients. He is highly professional to work with and highly experienced. He is a joy to represent and has many clients who commission him repeatedly.
