Private Tutoring

For the short-term or the long haul, work with a scholar who knows what it means to work hard for success. I'll meet you at your skill level, and we'll build and strengthen your skills from there.

College Essay Workshop

One of the most stressful parts of high school is writing the college essay, but it doesn't have to be so difficult. In this class, students will learn to approach the college essay as its very own type of essay, with different expectations and norms. This is a "BYO prompt" class: students can bring a college essay prompt to work on over the course of the workshop, or I can provide them with one from the Common App system. Students at any stage of the college application/essay process are welcome, including sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as those with or without drafts. We'll read a few example essays, learn what norms of the college essay genre are, brainstorm, outline, draft, and revise together. The best part: students will leave with a finished, application-ready product!

Writing Workshop: Skill Refresh

During the school year, capable English teachers work hard to teach students how to write essays, consistently assigning writing practice and giving advice for improvement. Over the summer, though, the writing muscles that students build up during the year begin to atrophy. In order to maintain those skills while still giving students a well-deserved and much-needed break, I've created the Skill Refresh Writing Workshop. Each week, we'll practice a new skill in the writing process, keeping students' minds sharp in every step from research to revision. Students will get to choose their own topics each week so that they can work on projects that are interesting to them. More importantly, students will come to understand more about their own personal writing process in an environment that stresses individuality and creativity rather than a one-size-fits-all model of writing.

Meeting Time: Every other Tuesday from 11:30AM until 1PM HST, via Zoom
Start Date: Tuesday, June 15
End Date: Tuesday, July 27 (4 meetings, 6 hours total)
Price: $150/student
Registration Deadline: Friday, June 11

Creative Writing Workshop

During the school year, most student writing consists of essays, essays, and more essays. This summer, take a break from the research/argumentative/college essay to experience a bit of fun in this creative writing workshop. All levels of writers are welcome, including middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. Together, we'll explore a variety of mediums, including short fiction, poetry, and lyric essays, talk about a few examples, and write our own pieces. Once students have drafts, they will share their writing with each other and we'll workshop them together in a friendly, safe, non-judgmental setting. By the end of the summer, students will have a refined portfolio and the skills to continue their creative writing throughout the year.

Meeting Time: Every other Friday from 11:30AM until 1PM HST, via Zoom
Start Date: Friday, June 18
End Date: Friday, July 30 (4 meetings, 6 hours total)
Price: $150/student

Summer Reading Accountability Group

The normal school year can be a busy, stressful, and exhausting time for students, so it is completely normal for them to want a break when summer comes. When teachers assign summer reading, though, they do it with students' best interests in mind: the goal of summer reading is to keep students' minds active during the summer. Still, students often see these summer reading projects as more work, which can be saved until the last few weeks before school starts again in the Fall, but putting summer reading off just makes it a more difficult task. This summer, students can join an accountability group filled with their peers so that they can complete their reading assignments little by little, cutting down on the stress of procrastination. More importantly, when students read at their own pace and engage with the text with fun projects (not essays or reading checks), they can start to see reading as not just another assignment, but as something exciting and entertaining that they can do on their own outside of school. Over the summer, we'll budget out time and create manageable deadlines, meet periodically, talk about what we've been reading, work on fun projects together, and make summer reading exciting. Students who have not been assigned summer reading are welcome as well! I will have suggestions for books that they may be interested in, and they are welcome to choose from those or any others.

As a former ENG100A teaching assistant and a private tutor for students from high school to doctoral levels, she has experience helping students to succeed, no matter where they are in the writing process and no matter their skill level. As a current graduate student, she is facing many of the same struggles that other students are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic, and she is approaching relationships with students with more empathy and understanding than ever.
