About Nathan

I earned my Bachelor's in Mathematics from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2014 and my Master's in Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2015 while enrolled as a PhD candidate in the UIC math department. I left academia a few years ago to pursue software development, but I love teaching too much to give it up completely! I'm excited to meet you and help you achieve your academic goals.

Hi! I'm Nathan and I'm a math and programming tutor with ten years experience tutoring, lecturing (at UIC and Loyola), and helping students succeed.

I believe that establishing trust is the foundation for any successful learning journey. When students feel comfortable admitting what they don’t understand, we can tackle gaps head-on and build genuine confidence.

Teaching method and techniques

-Concept-first, practice-second: I start by ensuring students grasp the underlying idea (e.g., why a loop works or why a theorem holds) before jumping into examples.
-Socratic questioning: By asking guided questions, I encourage students to articulate their reasoning, which helps me identify misconceptions early.
-Hands-on demonstrations: In programming sessions, we write and debug small code snippets together. In math, we use visual aids or step-by-step proofs to reinforce understanding.

A typical lesson plan (~60 min)

1. Check-in & warm-up (5–10 min): Brief review of last session or a quick problem to gauge current understanding.
2. Core concept (15–20 min): Clear explanation of a new topic—such as recursion in code or solving quadratic equations—paired with frequent questions to confirm comprehension.
3. Guided practice (15–20 min): Work through one or two problems together, modeling problem-solving strategies.
4. Independent practice & wrap-up (10–15 min): Student tackles a similar problem solo while I observe; we then review mistakes and highlight key takeaways.

-I foster a supportive environment where questions are welcomed and progress is celebrated—this mutual trust accelerates learning.
-I also share study strategies (like organizing code repositories or setting up formula cheat sheets) so students not only solve today’s problem but become better independent learners.
