About Matthew

In addition to piano and music theory, I received a thorough grounding in solfège and aural training. These skills have served me immensely and I consider it vital to pass them on to my students. After completing the piano and theory exams of the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB), I was accepted to study piano and composition at the University of Queensland, Australia.

My training in piano, music composition and production consists of:

• Bachelor of Music, First Class Honours, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Principal teachers: Mr Bevan Crabtree (piano), and Emeritus Professor Philip Bračanin (composition).

• Master of Music Composition, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. Principal supervisor: Dr Alessandro Timossi.

• PhD in Music Composition, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, Australia. Principal supervisor: Dr Trevor Pearce.

I have also taken masterclasses with composers Alexander Goehr and Thomas Adès, and piano lessons with concert pianist, Pamela Page.

I have also completed a Graduate Diploma in Education through the University of New England in Australia. This gave me a solid framework to refine my skills in teaching music performance, aural skills, composition, improvisation and music production.

I have worked in the music industry in many areas, especially:

• Keyboardist in bands, including a three-month residency in China with pop covers band The Frequency;
• Film Composer - recent films include the documentary Coo-ee, directed by Jan Van Roey, and Small Animals directed by Julie-Anne Bayliss;
• Composer for numerous contemporary dance productions;
• Composer for special events, e.g. the inaugural awards ceremony of the Design Institute of Australia;
• Music arranger for theatre shows;
• School music teacher at Domremy College (Sydney), St Andrew’s Cathedral School (Sydney) and St Mary’s Star of the Sea College (Wollongong, NSW);
• Tutor in Music Composition at the University of Queensland,
• Studio Music Teacher at Inna Kogan’s Music School (QLD);
• Piano Repetiteur for Bangarra Dance Theatre, The Australian Ballet, The West Australian Ballet, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Sydney Dance Company Studios and other dance companies.

About the teacher – Matthew Mylne
• Is an active performer of jazz, and music for classical dance, as well as a composer for film/contemporary dance
• Fifteen years of experience teaching piano and composition to people of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to professional musicians
• Has taught tertiary-level music composition courses at the University of Queensland, Australia

I currently work as a jazz pianist, and as a composer for film, assorted media, and popular and classical music commissions.

I have worked in the music industry in many areas, especially:

• Keyboardist in bands, including a three-month residency in China with pop covers band The Frequency;
• Film Composer - recent films include the documentary Coo-ee, directed by Jan Van Roey, and Small Animals directed by Julie-Anne Bayliss;
• Composer for contemporary dance productions;
• Composer for special events, e.g. the inaugural awards ceremony of the Design Institute of Australia;
• Music arranger for theatre;

• Tutor in Music Composition at the University of Queensland,
• Studio Music Teacher at Inna Kogan’s Music School (QLD);
• Piano Repetiteur for Bangarra Dance Theatre, The Australian Ballet, The West Australian Ballet, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Sydney Dance Company Studios and other dance companies.

I am absolutely ready to jump in and teach right at YOUR level. For example, perhaps you are a professional gigging pianist and you would like to develop a new area of your playing or knowledge of harmony – I am ready and able to take you to the next level.

Or, perhaps the student in question is a 5-year-old complete beginner – I am totally ready to work with children on their level and to make music RELEVANT and FUN for them. I very much enjoy teaching beginners, both adults and children of all ages.

My mission in music teaching is to empower each student to be self-sufficient as a musician. I consider it vital to provide my students with the skills not merely to reproduce the ideas of others, but to develop their individual identities as musicians. As a teacher, this means doing much more than just providing knowledge and saying “Try it this way”. Above all, it means giving people the skills to resolve their own technical and artistic questions, in a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

My teaching style reflects my goal of empowering students and giving them confidence in their musical abilities. My students gain the practical experiences and theoretical frameworks necessary to take charge of their practice. I design lessons according to the exact tastes and musical needs of each student — this makes lessons fun, engaging and personally relevant.

My training as a pianist and keyboardist includes classical music, jazz, pop/rock and contemporary art music, and I am happy to guide students in all of these styles. I have completed doctoral studies in music composition, and I love to help aspiring composers. In addition to piano/keyboard and composition, I am experienced in teaching music theory and computer music production. Students can focus on any one of these areas, or select a combination which suits them.

By listening and responding to the needs and preferences of each person I teach, I foster the relationship he or she has with their musical practice, and their love of music as a whole. By giving students skills to last a lifetime, I fulfil my ultimate goal as a teacher: to bring my students to the point where they no longer need me, and can rely on themselves as self-sufficient musicians.
