About Caleb

Hi! My name is Caleb DelVecchio. I am a first-year at the University of Virginia studying Physics. I am a very passionate learner and love to teach. Outside of academics I enjoy writing my own music, working as an auto-technician, reading (ask me about my favorite books!), and spending time with friends and family.

Some of my academic qualifications are as follows:
-International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) awardee
-High School Graduate with a 4.35 weighted GPA
-760 Math, 720 Reading SAT
-2 years of IB physics, IB math, and IB humanities
-Currently taking College level physics, math, chemistry, and humanities

I am a very outgoing and passionate person. I love learning and I hope I can instill a love of learning in students of all ages and disciplines.

My Approach to STEM Tutoring

For STEM subjects, I can create lesson plans, deliver lectures, develop and review problem sets, help students study for tests and exams, or assist students with homework.

My preferred teaching method begins with a diagnostic assessment or mock exam, which allows me to evaluate each student's individual capabilities. From there, I can create a personalized lesson plan focusing on the areas that need the most improvement.

A typical lesson plan includes the following:

-Overview of learning objectives
-Review of prerequisite knowledge and relevant formulas
-Lesson with examples
-Guided practice problems
-Independent practice problems
-Evaluation of student performance on practice problems
-Review and homework

I am a firm believer that, in STEM, practice makes perfect. Thus, much of our lesson time will be spent working through practice problems and guiding students toward solutions in ways that reinforce their understanding.

I offer personalized lesson plans tailored to each student's individual needs, including relevant practice problems. Students will be expected to complete homework assignments when necessary. Additionally, for students preparing for quizzes and exams, I can create mock exams that students can complete independently and review with me afterward.

My Approach to Writing Tutoring

My approach to writing tutoring differs slightly from my approach to STEM subjects. I primarily focus on helping students plan their writing and develop strategies for understanding and responding to writing prompts.

A typical lesson plan includes the following:

-Introduction to and evaluation of a writing prompt and/or stimulus material
-Development of an outline, including a clear thesis statement, strong body paragraphs, and the use of the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework
-Evaluation of the strength of arguments
-Collaboration on strategies to improve arguments and articulate thoughts effectively

For students struggling with writing, especially argumentative essays, I believe it is extremely important to fully organize their ideas on paper before beginning the introduction.

One of the most important aspects of any argumentative essay is understanding the stimulus material and formulating a well-thought-out argument before beginning the writing process.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor?

-Parental and Student Input
Because I create lesson plans based on the individual needs of each student, parents have significant input into what they would like their child to focus on. I am always open to feedback from both students and parents, and I welcome their involvement in the learning process.

-Adaptive Lesson Plans
Rather than requiring students to adapt to the rigid structure of a predetermined lesson plan, I develop lessons around each student's individual needs.
This is why I believe it is so important for students to complete a diagnostic assessment before beginning tutoring. The assessment allows me to identify the areas that need the most improvement, helping me make our lessons as efficient and productive as possible.

-Love of Learning
I love to learn. I am, and always will be, a passionate learner. I want students not only to succeed academically but also to understand that learning new things can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Before taking on a new student, I ask parents to complete a brief questionnaire about their child's individual interests and hobbies outside of school.
I do my best to incorporate these interests into lessons, writing prompts, and practice problems. My goal is to keep students engaged while demonstrating that what they learn in the classroom applies to many different aspects of life.
Ultimately, I want my students to recognize that learning is not simply something they are required to do, but something they can genuinely enjoy and become passionate about.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working with you!
