About Alex
I'm Alex, a 4th year PhD student in chemistry at McGill University, studying Li-ion battery materials. I am an anglophone with a working knowledge of French. I'm originally from Halifax, NS and moved to Montreal in 2019 for this degree. I've always had a passion for teaching. While in high school, I started a volunteer tutoring group that would give lessons at my previous middle school in subjects such as math, science, and English. During my undergraduate degree at Acadia University, where I graduated with Honours in chemistry, I continued to tutor both high school and undergraduate students. I was a teaching assistant for two years, teaching at the chemistry help centre, where undergraduate students could come for help with any chemistry course. I have also lectured introductory chemistry to 1st year undergraduates. During my PhD, I have continued to tutor math, chemistry, and calculus. Outside of my degree, I'm a tennis player, Netflix connoisseur, and a fan of board games. I look forward to meeting you!

I teach students from elementary through undergraduate level. In my 10 years of experience, I've learned to gauge students' strengths and weaknesses and tailor lessons so they get the most out of our sessions. I'm patient and understand that every student is different and may require different explanations and demonstrations to grasp the subject. I like to analogize or use visual aids to drive material home.
The lesson structure varies depending on the student's needs. They can be entirely a lecture, entirely walking through practice problems or a mix. In a typical session, we would begin with an overview of the topic and probing questions to make sure the student is absorbing the information. Then I lead into some practice problems where I let the student lead the problem and give hints and guidance along the way to improve their confidence when approaching future problems. Along the way, I give general strategies for approaching problems, studying, and what should be practiced. I can also assign homework problems if more practice is needed.
I can tutor online or in person. Online, I use a whiteboard on Zoom to illustrate concepts and work through problems. In-person, we can use pen and paper to work through problems, and depending on the subject, I may bring visual aids to better understand the material.
