About Omid

I am Abbas (Omid) Hassasfar, a PhD researcher in the Quantum Research Group at Stellenbosch University. I have more than 14 years of experience tutoring Physics and Mathematics to both high school and undergraduate university students, offering both in-person and online lessons.

In my classes, I focus on building strong conceptual understanding alongside solving a wide range of example problems. I use different textbooks and learning resources to match each student’s needs and learning style. At the end of each session, I also provide organized summaries and important formulas separately to help students revise more effectively.

I believe learning Physics and Mathematics can be both enjoyable and rewarding with the right guidance. My goal is to simplify complex concepts and help students build confidence step by step through clear explanations and practical problem-solving.

I offer both in-person and online lessons. In my classes, I focus on developing strong conceptual understanding while solving a wide range of example problems. I use different textbooks and learning resources depending on each student’s needs and learning style.

To support effective revision and long-term understanding, I also provide organized summaries and important formulas separately after sessions. My teaching approach is designed not only to help students improve academically, but also to make them feel more confident and comfortable with the subject.

Students are also welcome to join with friends for semi-private group lessons at a more affordable rate.

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and private tutoring?

I began tutoring approximately 11 years ago.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Physics to University and high school students, my field of study in my BSc, MSc, and PhD also was (is) Physics which is my passion.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher who inspired you?

    Richard Feynman
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should have a deep understanding of the subject they are teaching and be able to explain it clearly and accurately to the students, it should have good Communication. good tutors should be patient and respectful with the students, especially when they are struggling or making mistakes. A good tutor should be passionate and enthusiastic about the subject they are teaching and the students they are working with.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

One of the most memorable moments of my physics tutoring career was when I helped a student prepare for his final exam. He was struggling with the concept of electric circuits and Kirchhoff's rules. He had a hard time visualizing the current and voltage in different parts of the circuit. I decided to use a water analogy to explain the concept to him. I asked him to imagine that the circuit was a system of pipes, pumps, and valves. The water pressure was analogous to the voltage, the water flow was analogous to the current, and the resistance was analogous to the friction in the pipes. I used a diagram to show him how the water analogy applied to different types of circuits, such as series, parallel, and mixed. I also showed him how to use Kirchhoff's rules. He was amazed by how the analogy made sense and helped him understand the concept. He thanked me for making physics fun and easy for him. He later told me that he aced his exam and got a high score and distinction in his course. I was very proud of him and happy that I could make a difference in his learning.
  • Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

Yes, I had some teachers and professors who weren't effective in teaching their subjects. in my BSc and MSc and as a student, I understood the struggles that many students face.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

One of my passions is teaching, especially in the field of Physics. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with others and helping them achieve their learning objectives.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I think what makes me a Superprof is my passion for teaching and learning, my expertise in my subject, and my ability to adapt to the needs and goals of my students.
