About Beenne

Hi, I'm Beenne! I have a Ph.D. and have spent the last ten years teaching and tutoring mathematics to students ranging in age from 5 to 35 — from young kids building their first confidence with numbers to adults returning to statistics and quantitative coursework after years away. I currently teach research methods and statistics at the university level, alongside my tutoring work.

My approach centers on you, not just the material. Rather than lecturing at you, I ask questions that help you find the answer yourself, then build from there — breaking problems into manageable steps and gradually handing you more independence as your confidence grows. It's a patient, personalized style that meets you exactly where you are, whether that means filling in a gap from years ago or pushing into something more advanced.

I know math can feel intimidating, especially if it hasn't clicked before. My goal in every session is to change that — to help you leave not just understanding the problem in front of you, but feeling genuinely capable of tackling the next one on your own.

My Teaching Method
I build every lesson around motivational interviewing rather than straight instruction — instead of telling a student the rule and watching them apply it, I ask questions that get them to articulate what they already know, where they're stuck, and what they think might work. That reflective approach does two things: it surfaces the specific misconception causing the block (rather than re-teaching material they've already got), and it builds the student's own confidence that they can reason their way to an answer, not just memorize a procedure. From there I scaffold — breaking a problem into the smallest solvable piece, letting the student own that piece, then gradually removing support as their confidence and accuracy grow.

A Typical Lesson
1. Check-in (5 min) — open-ended questions about what felt solid and what felt shaky since the last session, so the plan reflects where the student actually is, not just the syllabus.
2. Concept anchor (10-15 min) — introduce or revisit the core idea using a concrete example or visual, then ask the student to restate it in their own words.
3. Guided practice (15-20 min) — work problems together, but I ask more than I tell ("what would you try first here?"), stepping in only when they're genuinely stuck.
4. Independent practice (10 min) — student works a problem solo while I observe, which tells me exactly what to reinforce.
5. Wrap-up (5 min) — student summarizes what they learned, and we set one specific goal for next time.

What Sets Me Apart
Ten years tutoring students from age 5 through 35 means I've had to develop real range — the scaffolding that works for a second-grader learning multiplication looks nothing like what works for an adult returning to statistics after fifteen years away, and I've built fluency across that whole span. I also bring a doctoral-level background in research methods and statistics (I currently teach it at the university level), so beyond arithmetic and algebra, I can take students meaningfully into higher-level math — statistics, data interpretation, quantitative reasoning — with the same patient, question-driven approach.

Who My Lessons Are For
- Young learners (roughly 5-12): foundational math — arithmetic, fractions, early problem-solving — with an emphasis on building confidence early so math doesn't become something they dread.
- Teens (middle/high school): algebra through pre-calculus, plus standardized test prep math, with a focus on closing specific gaps rather than re-teaching everything.
- Adults and college students (18-35): statistics, research methods, and quantitative coursework, including returning students who need to rebuild math confidence from scratch.
