About Atiqa
My name is Dr Atiqa Sheikh, and I am a mathematician with a PhD in Mathematics from Imperial College London. I also hold an MSci in Mathematics (First Class with Dean’s List and multiple academic prizes) from University College London. I have an Enhanced DBS check.
I have over 10 years of experience teaching mathematics across a wide range of levels, including GCSE, A-Level, admissions exams, and undergraduate mathematics. Since 2021, I have worked as an online mathematics tutor, and I also hold a lecturing position at The Open University. Previously, I have held academic roles at London South Bank University, The UCL Academy, and Imperial College London.
My tutoring is delivered under the name Accepting Academics, a mathematics tuition service focused on combining strong academic teaching with a supportive and structured learning environment.
Alongside academic excellence, I place great value on how students experience learning mathematics. I aim to create a calm, structured, and encouraging space where students feel able to engage with challenges, make mistakes safely, and build confidence over time.
I have always enjoyed mathematics, and I approach it with curiosity and appreciation for its clarity and structure. For me, mathematics is both intellectually rewarding and highly practical, developing skills such as logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving. I also value its universality as a subject that allows ideas to be explored with precision and objectivity.
Outside of mathematics, I am also a trained and practising musician and dancer, specialising in Hindustani vocal music and Kathak dance. This creative background strongly influences my teaching style, particularly in terms of patience, discipline, and sensitivity to individual learning processes.

I am a PhD mathematician with over 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring mathematics across GCSE, A-Level, admissions exams (including TMUA), and undergraduate level.
My tutoring is structured, personalised, and focused on building both mathematical understanding and confidence.
Lessons typically begin by identifying key gaps in understanding, strengthening core concepts, and then applying these through exam-style and problem-solving questions. I also use regular assessment to track progress and inform a clear personalised study plan, which may include targeted practice and structured homework between sessions.
Lessons are usually 1 hour long, but can be adapted depending on the student’s needs and goals.
My work is delivered under the name Accepting Academics, a mathematics tuition service founded by experienced educators with PhDs in Mathematics. This reflects a core part of my practice: recognising that students may experience anxiety, fear, or self-doubt, or other emotions around mathematics, and ensuring they are supported in a way that is both academically rigorous and emotionally safe.
This means creating a structured, supportive learning environment where mistakes are treated as part of the learning process, and where students are encouraged to engage with mathematics without judgement.
Recommendations

I can't recommend Atiqa highly enough. Atiqa has a wonderful manner with students: she is very focused, calm, and supportive. She has helped my son over the past year and a half significantly - not only have his marks improved, but he has increased in confidence and found a real love of maths. We are grateful to have her support during the high-stress GCSE period and look forward to continue working with her through A levels!
