About John
I have been successfully teaching university students since 2013, and most recently was a Teaching Fellow at the University of Birmingham. I have a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Sussex, and have published a book and journal articles based on my research. I really enjoy helping students to feel confident and enthusiastic about their work by explaining things clearly, and by using interesting real-world examples to inspire them. I believe that one-to-one tutoring is the fastest way to improve, and my students have always found my in-depth feedback on their work very useful.

I have been teaching undergraduate students since 2013, and can offer sessions in social sciences, anthropology, development studies and African studies. I also offer sessions to help you improve your study and research skills, including essay and dissertation writing, critical reading, literature searches, presentation skills, and qualitative research skills such as interviewing, participant observation and online research.
My lessons are intended for university students and students preparing for their A-levels. My approach to teaching is tailored to the student's specific needs and what they want to achieve, and is designed to be clear, approachable and jargon-free. Sessions might focus on a specific assessment, a skill that you want to improve on, or an introduction to a subject area that you want to get a rigorous grounding in. My objective is always to teach students how to think independently and critically and will help you to make rapid progress to improve your grades.
