About Dr Ryan

I graduated top of my class in the Master of Clinical Psychology in 2020 with a High Distinction average and was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar Award. I have recently completed my PhD, which explored the altruistic behaviour of informal supporters of survivors of intimate partner violence.

With over five years of experience tutoring and lecturing in psychology, I’ve taught and marked across all levels—from first-year undergraduate students to postgraduate coursework students in the Master of Clinical Psychology and Master of Professional Psychology programs. I also supervise higher degree research students, supporting them in developing strong research design, critical thinking, and academic writing skills.

I bring a warm, practical, and student-focused approach to tutoring—drawing on my clinical, research, and teaching experience to help students not only understand complex concepts but also apply them with confidence.

Don’t feel stuck with your Honours thesis. You don’t have to figure it out alone!

I specialise in supporting psychology students, particularly Honours/Masters students navigating their thesis year, to move from uncertainty and overwhelm to clarity, structure, and confidence.

Whether you’re feeling stuck with your literature review, identifying a meaningful ‘gap’, or overwhelmed by how to pull your thesis together, I provide practical, step-by-step academic support across the entire Honours year - not just last-minute editing.

Honours thesis support can include:
• Clarifying research questions and hypotheses
• Structuring proposals and literature reviews
• Strengthening Methods and Analysis plans
• Making sense of results and building a strong Discussion
• Ongoing feedback across thesis milestones
• Ensuring alignment with marking criteria and examiner expectations

I also provide detailed proofreading and written feedback on undergraduate psychology assignments (typically ~1,500 words per hour). Feedback is clear, constructive, and directly linked to your marking rubric, so you understand why changes are needed and how to improve next time.

My background covers a wide range of psychology areas, including:
• Clinical Psychology
• Abnormal Psychology
• Developmental & Lifespan Psychology
• Social Psychology
• Psychological Assessment
• Clinical Interventions
• Research design

Whether you’re completing undergraduate coursework or trying to keep your Honours thesis on track, I tailor support to your level and goals, helping you submit stronger work while developing skills you’ll carry into postgraduate study and research.

Find out more about Dr Ryan

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I became interested in psychology as a field when I commenced working in corrective services. Various professional development courses highlight the importance of psychology in working with vulnerable populations. I then enrolled in a bachelor of psychology, and am now completing my PhD. During my post graduate studies I have had the opportunity to do tutoring and marking at my university and have thoroughly enjoyed this. As a student who values taking the time to explore topics I decided to apply my skills to private tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach a range of psychology topics at the bachelor, honours, and masters level. I have a keen interest in developmental, social, and abnormal (clinical) psychology, however, I enjoy all topics of psychology.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Master's supervisor was a huge inspiration to me. Receiving such supportive guidance and feedback really encouraged me to do the best that I can and made me fully appreciated the value of mentoring/tutoring.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think it is important to be able to be flexible to the needs of students and respond to specific areas they would like to focus on. With 7 years of full-time psychology study behind me I feel that I am able to work with students from direct experience and provide relevant and clear examples to work through.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I completed the first four years of study totally on-line (the first time I stepped foot on a university campus was the first day of my Master of Clinical Psychology), so I understand the isolation in on-line study. Therefore, I fully appreciate the value of tutoring and how important it is for on-line students.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Psychology is such a broad subject - the study of the human mind! Sometimes it can be difficult to hone in on what a marker is looking for. I have developed a deep understanding of how to respond to different types of assignments and make sure that you are fulfilling the assignment brief.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about helping students develop their critical analysis skills. When we unlock critical thinking skills we gain a deeper appreciation of how the world works - this makes us and and our writing better.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

As a sessional academic at an Australian University I have marked countless psychology assessment tasks from introductory psychology to the Master of Clinical Psychology program. I know how to help student's write exactly what markers are looking for because I am one!
