Each lesson is devoted to a topic of the student's choice. We go through the notes in detail, then work through exam questions to consolidate the information. I also provide supplemental support tailored to each student through providing revision notes and extra practice questions.
Each student has individual needs and requirements, and my lessons are tailored to best help them achieve their goals. My students have praised my patience and ability to explain things in a clear, uncomplicated way. Building a solid foundation in chemistry is the most important thing - once you have the necessary skills, it's just about applying them!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in chemistry in Year 9, drawn to the practical, hands-on nature of the subject and the process of turning ideas into experiments and meaningful results. This led me to study chemistry at university and gain a PhD. My interest in private tutoring comes from enjoying the opportunity to share my knowledge and support students through their learning, using my own experience to explain complex concepts clearly and build confidence.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Chemistry across all levels, from KS3 through to university. I enjoy covering the full breadth of the subject, with a particular enthusiasm for organic chemistry, where problem-solving and reaction mechanisms really click for students. My focus is always on helping learners understand the “why” behind the chemistry, regardless of the topic.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My chemistry and biology teachers in middle school played a key role in inspiring my interest in science. They made the subjects engaging, approachable, and enjoyable, which helped spark my curiosity and ultimately led me to pursue a career in chemistry.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be an attentive listener to understand each student’s individual needs, strengths, and areas for improvement. Patience and clear communication are equally important, as they allow complex ideas to be explained in a supportive and accessible way, helping students build confidence and make steady progress.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my earliest memorable moments in chemistry was at school, when a practical experiment didn’t give the expected result and I had to work out why. Instead of seeing it as a failure, my teacher encouraged me to analyse what had happened and adjust the method. That experience taught me that chemistry is as much about thinking critically and learning from mistakes as it is about getting the “right” answer, and it’s an approach I now pass on to my students.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The mathematical and physical aspects of chemistry were not my strongest areas at school, so I put a lot of effort into developing these skills over time. This experience means I understand the challenges students often face, and I use the strategies that worked for me to help them build confidence and improve in these areas.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a range of interests outside teaching, including piano, drawing, and baking, all of which involve creativity, structure, and practice. What I particularly enjoy about chemistry is that it brings these elements together, combining creativity with technical skill and analytical thinking. This balance is what I’m most passionate about sharing with students, helping them see chemistry as both logical and creative rather than something to memorise.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof is seeing my students succeed and move on to achieve their goals. I’ve supported students who have gone on to secure places in highly competitive courses such as Veterinary Science, Medicine, and Dentistry. Helping students reach the grades they need is incredibly fulfilling, and I’m motivated to continue supporting as many learners as possible on their academic journeys.
