About Ryland
Recent PhD graduate with degrees in chemical engineering, chemistry, and materials science. I have several years of teaching experience as a tutor, an undergraduate lecturer and teaching assistant, and a graduate lecturer. I also have personal experience in switching fields and rapidly having to get caught up on material. I'm someone who did not have to study in school for many years; eventually, it caught up with me and I had to figure it out the hard way. I believe this gives me a particular advantage with similar students who were able to coast for a time but are now struggling to keep up. My particular teaching style is not to rattle off information, but rather to ask about how the student understands a topic and then address specific misunderstandings based on their answers.

I prefer to give my students a chance to overcome an obstacle on their own. If they are struggling I will ask questions to determine what specifically is the sticking point, and then either point out the flaw in their approach or give them some direction so that we can collaboratively come to a solution. I also consider meta concerns such as study technique, learning disabilities, test anxiety, and contextualization to give students a stable foundation from which to grow.
