• When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

  I developed an interest in my subject back in high school when I realised how much I enjoyed helping my classmates understand their work. Seeing someone go from confused to confident because of my explanation is what made me fall in love with tutoring. That feeling has stayed with me ever since.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach Mathematics, and I especially enjoy working on the basics—number operations, algebra, and understanding concepts step by step. I am also passionate about practical examples because they help students connect maths to real life. What I like a little less is when students rush through work, because understanding comes first before speed.

• Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes, I had a maths teacher who was patient and took time to explain things until everyone understood. She showed me that teaching is not about showing how much you know—it’s about helping someone else grow. That inspired me to become the type of tutor who makes learning feel safe and supportive.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  A good tutor needs patience, effective communication, and the ability to break work down into simple steps. You must be able to listen to your student and notice where they struggle. Most importantly, you need to care about their progress and celebrate even the small wins.

• Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

  I remember helping a friend prepare for a test, and she kept saying, “I’ll never understand algebra.” After I explained it using simple real-life examples, she ended up scoring among the highest in the class. That moment reminded me why teaching comes naturally to me.

• Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

  Yes, like many students, I had moments where certain topics felt overwhelming. But needing help at times made me a better tutor today because I understand how it feels to be stuck. That’s why I never judge my students—everyone learns at a different pace.

• Do you have a particular passion?

  My passion is helping students build confidence in mathematics. I love seeing a student finally understand something they struggled with. Outside of teaching, I also enjoy practical learning activities—anything hands-on that helps me see how things work.
