About Kia

I love teaching because I want to be a positive influence in shaping a student's life. The main reason I wanted to 'be a teacher when I grow up' was because teachers could not understand how to help me when I was little. When I started school I did not know a word of English, and thus struggled as a learner, not realizing that it was my lack of English language proficiency which led to this. Fast forward many years later, I proudly have a Bachelor of Arts in Education, a Bachelor of Education, and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). My most recent full-time job was working at the Central Queensland Regional Education Department prior to moving back to Victoria. I like to understand students, who they are as a person, and their 'learner characteristics'; this is important for me as an educator because I can apply my knowledge and expertise when working with each individual learner. I do NOT have a planned accumulation of lessons that I use during tutoring sessions. I seek to be adaptable and differentiate for each lesson based on discussions with the student (if applicable; classroom/subject teacher at their school and parent). I refer to the Australian Curriculum and current evidence-based research, and any other relevant resources when planning for lessons. I like to co-decide learning goals to be achievable and frequently provide updated progress. I can boastfully add that students I have taught in the past have often showered me with letters, gifts, and comments. Many often stated that they wished they could have me as their teacher for the following year.
