About George
I’m an understanding and adaptive tutor with five years' experience and a strong track record. I graduated from Oxford this year with a Masters in Roman History and a BA in Ancient and Modern History, and have been tutoring throughout my time there. Over that time I have acquired particular experience in coaching students for Oxbridge application tests like the HAT and HAA, as well as personal statement and interview prep. I’ve also taught A-Level and GCSE History and English, with good results, to a variety of learners. My approach is centred on the level and needs of the student, but I always try to encourage genuine enthusiasm, independent thinking, and enjoyment of the subject. I begin by chatting with the student about their pre-existing interests, their goals, and any things they struggle with. Afterwards, we build a structured plan which iteratively addresses those tricky areas and builds enthusiasm for the subject. I’ve been told that my own interest is infectious, but I can’t confirm that. Depending on the student and their priorities, the lessons can be super straightforward — just thinking about how to structure essays and articulate their ideas — or can deal with complex concepts and problems. Whatever the level or the problem, I can usually guide you through it. Through my degree, I’ve studied most parts of the world and most bits of history at least once, and I have extensive knowledge of the Oxbridge admissions system. I maintain a positive, friendly, relaxed environment so that the student feels encouraged and comfortable. I firmly believe that people perform best when they can feel confident and happy in their knowledge and themselves, not anxious or intimidated.
