About Omid
Key to my successful teaching/mentoring vision and student engagement is my sensitivity to contemporary socio-cultural nuances and how they affect student progress and their interpretation of learning, research and writing. I align course content with examples of public philosophy, literature, popular culture and current affairs in order to evoke multidimensional student responses and validate the presence of diverse identities and learning styles. In particular, my methods are informed and enhanced by my teaching/research work in global and community settings.

Omid and I share a deep commitment to research and activism in relation to creative work by refugees. Over several years I have witnessed his dedication to social justice through both his intellectual work and his public engagement. Omid has an exceptional ability to collaborate with diverse people and groups; he can communicate complex ideas in ways that inspire and empower others; and he always connects his philosophical work with the lived realities of those struggling for freedom and equity. I have benefitted from his feedback and guidance on numerous occasions - his support and advice regarding my research and writing has been extremely valuable, especially my contribution to his co-translated/co-edited book Freedom, Only Freedom: The Prison Writings of Behrouz Boochani.
His work consistently demonstrates courage, integrity, and a deep commitment to defending freedom in all its forms. Whether through his writing, advocacy, or collaboration with others, he has made a meaningful contribution to fostering dialogue, challenging oppression, and promoting justice and creativity across different communities.
I wholeheartedly recommend Omid in any educational capacity. His commitment to his students and collaborators, combined with his intellectual rigor and generosity of spirit, makes him an outstanding scholar, educator, and colleague.Omid is an engaging and inspiring teacher whose classes are always interactive and enjoyable. I especially appreciate how he shares personal experiences, which provide valuable insights and inspiration for my future. As an international student, his encouragement has greatly improved my confidence in speaking English. He is kind, knowledgeable, and highly supportive. I highly recommend him to any student.
I met Omid in 2021 through some academic work I did critiquing the Australian immigration detention centres. Since then, we have consistently been in touch and collaborated on different projects, most significantly a set of articles for a special issue of The Philosopher. Omid was extremely helpful, putting me in touch with relevant people, giving useful comments, and offering fruitful discussion. I love his translational and academic work, and have very much enjoyed our exchanges over the years on a broad range of philosophical and political topics. He is both a great academic and very engaged in various more public and politically oriented projects, with an ability to move beyond the ivory tower that is incredibly refreshing and makes his insights all the more valuable. I wholeheartedly recommend Omid in any educational capacity.
I was a student of his one of the subjects at university. Since I was still learning English, he helped me very much. Also, when I asked him a question related to the class, he explained in detail until I understand. His passion to his expertise, his class and his students really great and helped me very much while I was studying in his class.
I was mentored by Dr Omid Tofighian while writing my thesis and later collaborating with him on the translation of No Friend but the Mountains. During all our interactions he had a profound impact on my academic and professional journey. Dr Tofighian challenged me to think more critically, engage across disciplines, and approach research with both intellectual rigour and ethical responsibility. His guidance throughout my thesis writing strengthened the quality of my work and shaped the way I think as a researcher and translator. While working alongside him on the translation of No Friend but the Mountains he demonstrated a unique ability to bring together scholarship, creativity, and a deep commitment to justice. Dr Tofighian is careful and open in all aspects of his work, and he creates a collaborative environment where everyone is encouraged to contribute, question, and improve. His approach to teaching and research is grounded in solidarity, responsibility, and a commitment to amplifying voices that challenge dominant narratives. In addition to his outstanding academic and professional achievements, Dr Tofighian is a generous educator, a thoughtful collaborator, and a genuinely empathetic person.
Having been oriented by Omid in my master's thesis ' Taking Power from the Border: How Women's Roles Shape Collective and Creative Resistance', I absolutely recommend anyone who is willing to challenge themselves to seek Omid's orientation.
While writing my master's thesis with his orientation, I truly learnt a lot within a multidisciplinary and profoundly critical approach, and was able to deliver a high quality piece of research for which we obtained the highest ranking (20/20) from the University of Coimbra.
I believe Omid to not only be an excellent professional, but also his sense of commitment to be deeply rooted in an ethical approach while working on team and as a researcher.
Beyond professional, clever, and courageous in the projects that integrates I believe him to be a reliable, open-minded and empathic individual.
One of the most important connections I have made in the course of my professional path undoubtedly.I have known Dr. Omid since 2018, when I first attended his lectures on injustice and philosophical narratives of resistance. I have since maintained a close working relationship with him as we worked on several editorial projects, the most notable of which involved translating unheard voices from diaspora communities. Dr. Omid has been an indispensable source of academic and editorial guidance both during university and afterward; his philosophical rigor and dedication to excellence in writing helped shape my knowledge and improve my analytical writing.
Dr. Tofighian is an outstanding researcher and educator. Over the years I have known him, I have been inspired by his dedication to teaching and his remarkable breadth of knowledge across philosophy, literary criticism, religious studies, and translation theory. As a supervisor and reviewer, he is highly collaborative, working closely with students to develop their ideas and helping them bring their work to its fullest potential.
