About Marc
Bonjour! I'm Marc, a native French speaker and academic linguist with over ten years of experience teaching in universities across the UK and Ireland. I grew up in Tours, Loire Valley. For a while, I was a Lecturer in French Linguistics, although now I mostly focus on my research. I have a big interest in understanding how Medieval French slowly evolved into Modern French.
My path into teaching started during my own studies, and it quickly became the part of academic life I love most. There's nothing quite like the moment a student stops translating in their head and just starts speaking!
I hold a PhD in Linguistics, and my research looks at the history and structure of the French language itself, which gives me a deep, detailed understanding of how French actually works: not just how to speak it, but why it works the way it does. I put that knowledge to practical use in every lesson, breaking down grammar in a way that's clear and intuitive rather than intimidating (we all remember how grammar was taught at school...).
What matters most to me as a tutor is empowering my students to feel genuinely confident speaking French, at their own pace, in a relaxed and supportive environment. Whether you're starting from scratch or refining an advanced level, I tailor each lesson to who you are and what you want to achieve.

My lessons typically last one hour, though I'm happy to adapt to what suits you best. I welcome students from all levels, whether you're a complete beginner who wants to learn how to order food on your next holiday or a student needing to prepare for an exam (GCSE, A level, Baccalaureate, Bachelor's, Master's...).
My approach is all about empowering you to speak with confidence, without the fear of making mistakes. I started being fluent in English when I stopped worrying about my mistakes!
I place a strong focus on grammar, since it's the DNA of a language, but I teach it in a practical, intuitive way rather than drowning you in technical terminology. Alongside this, conversation is at the heart of every lesson, since real fluency comes from actually speaking the language, not just studying it. I am also very happy to help students with their translation training.
My teaching career started in France, where I taught English. I have over 10 years of experience teaching French in British and Irish universities, including the University of Oxford, which means I'm used to adapting my teaching to a wide range of learners and goals.
