About Jessica
Hi, I'm Jessica! Music theory is the subject where my own personal journey from confusion to genuine confidence and disciplined understanding makes the biggest difference in how I teach — and for 6 years that personal journey has been the most powerful tool I bring to every student I work with. I know from direct personal experience what it feels like to sit in a theory class feeling completely lost while everyone around you seems to understand, and I know exactly what it took to push through that confusion and build the kind of real, confident theoretical understanding that eventually transformed everything about how I hear and create music.
I share those personal experiences openly and honestly with my students because they are not just relatable — they are genuinely useful guides for navigating the same challenges my students are currently facing. When a student feels overwhelmed by modal harmony or completely confused by counterpoint, I share exactly how I felt facing those same concepts, what specific approaches helped me break through, and what disciplined daily habits made the difference between slow frustrating progress and genuine mastery. Theory becomes a completely different subject when it is taught by someone who remembers vividly what it was like not to understand it — and that empathetic, experience-guided approach is what makes my lessons consistently produce real confidence and lasting results. Over 6 years I have helped students pass school and AP Music Theory exams, write and perform original compositions, and develop a musical understanding that transformed their playing. I was honored with a Music Theory Educator Award by the Philadelphia Music Teachers Association in 2023. My music theory lessons are grounded in personal experience and built around developing genuine confidence and real discipline in every student. I cover music notation reading and writing, note values and rhythm reading, time signatures and meter, scales — major, minor, pentatonic, modal and chromatic, intervals and ear recognition, triads and seventh chords, chord qualities and progressions, the circle of fifths and key relationships, Roman numeral analysis, diatonic and non-diatonic harmony, secondary dominants and borrowed chords, voice leading and part writing, counterpoint fundamentals, ear training and melodic dictation, harmonic and rhythmic dictation, solfege and sight-singing, analyzing current songs using music theory, musical form and structure analysis, music history and musicology from Medieval through Contemporary periods, orchestration fundamentals and instrument family ranges, arranging for small and large ensembles, songwriting techniques and modern song structure, hook development and lyric writing basics, original composition projects, introduction to film scoring, music production theory and MIDI composition basics, and focused AP Music Theory and college level exam preparation.
